U.S. House Passes Needed National Service Legislation

AARP Tracks “Key Vote” on Government Watch for 40 Million Members;

Representatives Capito, Mollohan and Rahall Vote Yes on Serve America Act

Washington, D.C. – AARP today applauded the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act (HR 1388)—a bill that will strengthen and expand civic engagement and volunteer opportunities for people of all ages. Designated as a “key vote” by AARP on behalf of its 40 million members, each elected official’s vote is posted on AARP’s Government Watch site (www.aarp.org/governmentwatch) so individuals across the nation can see how their legislators voted on this important bill.

Frank Bellinetti, Senior State Director for AARP West Virginia, released the following statement today:

“AARP members stand ready to give, and offer a lifetime of acquired skills to meet a range of community needs. The Serve America Act will help provide the additional service opportunities people age 50+ are looking for.”

“In a survey conducted for AARP last year, millions of boomers and older Americans said that in the next five years, they want to increase their volunteer service to improve their communities and our world.”

 Below is the key vote summary of how West Virginia’s elected officials voted on the Serve America Act, which can also be found at www.aarp.org/governmentwatch:

A recent letter from AARP CEO Bill Novelli to House leadership outlines the most important issues for older Americans in this legislation:

  • The bill is devoted to enhancing service opportunities for persons age 50+ so that they can apply a lifetime of acquired skills to address a range of identified service needs.
  • The bill includes provisions that improve the capacity of non-profit, service and philanthropic organizations to recruit, manage and apply volunteer skills to identified service needs in this period of economic recession and lower charitable giving.

Buyer Beware: There’s No Such Thing as a Free Lunch, Especially at Tax Time

Help Fight Investment Fraud in Your State

Americans are often bombarded by junk mail; unwanted phone calls during dinnertime, and, in many cases, with “free lunch” investment seminar invitations. This is particularly true during tax season when the invitations promise no risk investments and ways to avoid all taxes. Although many of these seminars sell legitimate products, there have been far too many reports of people being scammed out of their life savings.

AARP, in collaboration with the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA), is working diligently to fight consumer fraud by encouraging individuals to join the Free Lunch Monitor program. Hundreds of people have already joined this national campaign to help monitor free lunch investment seminars.

By becoming a Free Lunch Monitor, you can help to fight fraud in your state. If you plan to attend a seminar, take the “What to Listen for Checklist” and report your findings to AARP. We are sharing this information with securities regulators nationwide. Please visit the web site www.aarp.org/nofreelunches  to download the checklist and help make the market place safer for all investors.

Some believe our current economic crisis means we can't afford to fix health care right now. The opposite is true.  With the cost of care skyrocketing and families' health premiums slated to double in the next 10 years, we have one message for them: we can't afford not to.  If we don't fix health care, we can't truly fix our economy.

Please take a minute TODAY to tell the West Virginia Legislature that you demand action on Health Care Reform Now!  Call- 1-888-847-5544

Right now, thousands of West Virginia families are struggling to afford the rising costs of health care.  Too many families are not covered by health insurance.  Too many West Virginians suffer from costly chronic health conditions, especially when they are not managed.

The West Virginia State Legislature has the chance to change this by passing reforms this year.

Call the West Virginians' Campaign for a Healthy Future Hotline to be connected directly to the Senate President & Speaker of the House.  Call 1-888-847-5544 to let your Legislator know that Health Care is important to you.

Now is the time to act. Tell you Legislator it's time to cut through the gridlock to get something done. Tell them you want health care reform passed for FUTURE generations.  The health of our children and grandchildren depend on it.

You can make it happen!

Call 1-888-847-5544

Tell Us How It Went! How did your call go? What did the Legislator's office say to you?   Once you make the call, send us an email at info@wvhealthyfuture.com

Thank you!

AARP today announced the next phase of its campaign to reform America’s health care system, capitalizing on an eventful week in Washington—including the release of President Obama’s budget plan—to build more momentum across the country.

AARP West Virginia Senior State Director Frank Bellinettiresponded to today’s release of President Obama’s budget plan for the coming year, which AARP had asked to include a commitment to health care reform in 2009.

''Our leaders need to work with the president in a bipartisan fashion to complete the plan for reform and finance reform in a fiscally—and morally—responsible way,'' Bellinetti said.  ''They must make sure that any savings from Medicare and Medicaid are dedicated to reforms that strengthen the quality, efficiency and performance of our health care system, including these critical lifeline programs.''

AARP also announced key priorities to be included in health reform legislation in 2009, including:

  • Making affordable health care coverage options available to everyone, especially people ages 50-64 who are among the fastest growing group of uninsured;
  • Keeping Medicare affordable by rewarding doctors and hospitals for quality rather than the quantity of care;
  • Promoting prevention and healthy behaviors;
  • Eliminating fraud, waste and abuse; and
  • Improving care coordination for people with chronic conditions and helping them stay in their homes and out of institutions.

The AARP Driver Safety Program (DSP) is the nation’s first and largest classroom course for drivers age 50 and older. The program was created in 1979 to encourage safe driving among older Americans. A survey of 5,404 DSP participants sought to determine whether participants had changed any of 17 key driving behaviors (such as avoiding left turns or limiting driving) as a result of what they had learned in the course.
