Busy Night on the Networks for Health Care News

AARP will appear on several news programs today and we in the South Carolina state office for AARP invite you to listen in and judge for yourself.  Below are a list of programs that will air interviews with top spokesmen for AARP.  AARP is fighting for seniors, just as we did to protect Social Security and just as did to keep your Medicare premiums from increasing last year and just as we did to make sure that persons on fixed income also received an economic stimulus check.

AARP spokespeople will be on several network and cable news programs this afternoon.  John Rother already appeared on MSNBC this afternoon and he will be featured in a story on ABC World News Tonight on end of life provisions and in an NBC Nightly News story on health care reform. David Certner will be on MSNBC at 3 PM eastern and then tonight on the O’Reilly Factor on Fox (airs nationally at 8 PM eastern).  AARP will also be on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer on PBS tonight.”

In the July/August edition of the Bulletin, AARP reported that funding had been restored for the GAPS program and members interested in learning more could call the toll-free number at the state agency that administers the GAPS program, the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. When members called this number, they were informed this story was not true. Below are the facts concerning this issue:

Fact:  AARP advocated for restoration of the GAPS coverage of the “doughnut hole”.

Fact:  Legislators responded by appropriating additional funding to help seniors with the loss of GAPS coverage when in the “doughnut hole”.

Fact:  The restored funding became available with the passage of the state budget bill on July 1, 2009.

Breaking News:  The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the state agency that administers the GAPS program, states that the money cannot be used in this calendar year as all the Medicare Part D insurance companies’ benefits are set by federal regulation.  SCDHHS plans to include the increased benefit for the 2010 calendar year.

AARP Action: The AARP state office staff and state legislators plan to meet during the week of August 3rd, 2009 with the director of the SC Department of Health and Human Services to determine if any assistance can be provided in 2009 to GAPS recipients who have reached the “doughnut hole” in their drug costs. Please stay tuned for additional updates.

TIP: For those who have not reached the “doughnut hole” yet, try AARP’s online “doughnut hole” Calculator, which may also be able to offer suggestions on cheaper, but equally effective, drug choices. Go to www.aarp.org/doughnuthole . Even if you don’t fall into the “doughnut hole,” this free calculator may help you to save money.

There is so much of a discussion on health care reform, it is time to shine the light on the myths and misconceptions floating around.

First - AARP has NOT endorsed any health care reform bill

Today's Myth Buster:

Myth: Health Care Reform equals socialized medicine

FACT: Most Americans now get their health coverage through their jobs.  The House and Senate plans now being debated both leave employer-sponsored coverage in place and with it, broad choices for peple to pick their own doctors and hospitals.

Has it been forty years since that historic day when Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon? So this made us dig - do a google search for 1969.

Here's what we uncovered -

"The opposition to the war continued to increase with more and more attending anti war demonstrations and demanding that the US withdrew from Vietnam. The music came from groups including the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin and the Beatles and the most famous music festival of modern times "WOODSTOCK" took place on a New York Farm on August 15th to August 17th with more than 400,000 avid music fans attending to see the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and others perform live. fashions reflected the anti war sentiment with military jackets adorned with peace signs, and other trends including long unkempt wild hair and headbands showed the feelings of anti establishment felt by the youth."
