AARP Offers Free Legal Guide to help grandparents and others raising grandchildren.
More than 25,000 grandparents in Wisconsin are primary caregivers for their grandchildren living with them. Children who are raised by someone other than their biological parents make up approximately 6 percent of all children in the U.S., although many experts feel that this family arrangement is highly under-reported.
In an effort to help them navigate the complicated legal system, AARP Wisconsin has created “Wisconsin’s Legal Guide for Grandparents & Other Relatives Raising Children 2008.”
The 33-page second edition guide includes several case-law updates. It defines different types of family relationships, such as temporary guardianship and legal adoption, and outlines different types of public aid that may be available for each type of care arrangement, as well as the pros and cons of these arrangements.
“In Wisconsin the trend of grandparents who are caring for their grandchildren is definitely on the rise,” said AARP Wisconsin Program Coordinator Jeanne Benink. “We felt that we had to do something to assist these people who probably haven’t parented for several years or more.”
