AARP and Reno Police Department’s (RPD) Senior Auxiliary Volunteer Effort (SAVE) team up to help RPD SAVE volunteers become safer drivers

(Reno, NV)  AARP and SAVE, the civilian volunteer organization of the Reno Police Department, have joined together to provide RPD volunteers with a refresher course on driver safety.  As many as 60 SAVE volunteers are expected to complete one of three courses offered by AARP’s Driver Safety Program here in Reno hosted at the Public Safety Training Center on Spectrum Boulevard.

“We approached the Reno Police Department with the idea that we could offer some basic driving safety tips to their SAVE volunteers at a discount from our usual rate,” said Bill Perry, Driver Safety Program state coordinator.

The RPD SAVE volunteers handle many of the more routine duties typically managed by the police department—from writing handicapped parking infractions to handling abandoned vehicle complaints—while freeing the Reno police force to focus on more critical public safety duties.

While the RPD isn’t paying for their volunteers to take the course, those volunteers who sign up will get the safety training for half price.  That, combined with the state-mandated insurance discounts offered to older drivers who take driving refresher courses, makes it a real value for RPD SAVE volunteers.

This is the first time the AARP Nevada Drivers Safety Program has collaborated with a state agency to offer the course, available year-round to Nevadans 50+.

“We hope this is the first of many partnerships with public safety agencies throughout state,” said Perry.  “This is a worthwhile effort for the agencies and their volunteers, from a safety and cost savings perspective.”
AARP Driver Safety Program courses are offered by trained volunteer instructors throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In Nevada there are 77 instructors in a number of communities statewide.  Information on the AARP Driver Safety Program can be found at: www.aarp.org/drive or by calling 1-888-AARP NOW(1-888-227-7669).

Nevada is facing a severe budget crisis. You can help by making your voice heard.

Tell your Legislators you are concerned about
Nevada ’s future:

(Use this link to identify your Legislators http://mapserve.leg.state.nv.us/website/lcb/viewer.htm )

Tell them:  “I live in your district and am concerned about Nevada’s future.  I’ll be watching how legislators manage our budget problems.  We cannot balance the budget on the backs of children, seniors, disabled, sick, and the poor.”

We’ll need your help as the session progresses and we promise tokeep you updated on our activities and legislative progress. To receive calls to action and legialative updates, become an AARP E-Activist: www.aarp.org/getinvolved

AARP Nevada will focus on these issues during the 2009 Legislature.
AARP Nevada 2009 Legislative Issues
  • Proposed cuts to Medicaid will devastate our health care system as providers will close their doors.  People will not be able get the basic health services they need.

  • Preserving Home and Community Based Services is essential and cost-effective to keep people living independently.  These services keep people out of nursing homes.

  • Selling the Tobacco Settlement will destroy the home and community based services that enable people to live in their communities across the state.

You can also find out more information about Nevada State Legislative activity, listen to hearings, and more at www.leg.state.nv.us

AARP is throwing a party in October 2009.  We’re thrilled that Las Vegas has been chosen to host AARP’s 2009 National Event and Expo; Vegas@50+.

Naturally we can’t throw a party for 30,000 guests alone. We’re looking for local volunteers to help during the event. We need to fill a wide variety of volunteer positions. Do you love to meet new people? Would you like to be a part of an exciting, high-energy event?

We’d love to have you join us as an event volunteer. Specifics are provided below -- if you need additional information email us at nvaarp@aarp.org .

What:  AARP Presents Vegas@50+

You won’t want to miss these three days and nights of concerts, celebrity speakers, engaging educational forums, hundreds of interactive exhibitors, giveaways, and much, much more. Meet up with old friends, bring the family, and make new friends. We’ll show you a good time!

AARP’s 2004 Life@50+ event was held in Las Vegas. Local event volunteers reported they loved the experience and couldn’t wait for the event to return. They said volunteering made the event even better!

Well . . . it’s baaack.

When: October 22–24

Where:   Las Vegas Sands Expo & Convention Center

Volunteer Details

If you are selected as a Vegas@50+ volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to work at least one shift (typically 4 hours) during the 3-day event.

Although we can’t provide transportation or lodging expenses, you will receive free event registration (excluding concerts and night club activities) and a free meal for each scheduled shift. (Since we aren’t able to notify you about your selection as a volunteer until much later this year – you should register for the event and we’ll refund your registration if you become a volunteer.)

Just complete the Volunteer Interest Form (assets.aarp.org/www.aarp.org_/cs/misc/vegas_50_volunteer_app..pdf) and return it to our office. We’re developing a pool of volunteers so that when the actual positions are identified in late Spring, we can begin the process of filling them. We will notify you in August or September with your shift assignment and will hold a mandatory orientation session in early-October.

Physical Requirements
This event is high-energy and lots of fun but volunteering for it can be physically demanding. Nearly all volunteer positions require that you walk or stand for most, if not all of your 4-hour shift. Additionally parking for the Sands Convention Center is provided at the Venetian Resort which is quite a long walk to the convention center.

We look forward to working with you in October.

Nevada Federal Credit Union Named by AARP as One of the 2008 Best Employers for Workers Over 50

Cornell University Heads List; National Institutes of Health First Federal Agency Honored by AARP

(Las Vegas, Nev) – A diverse group of forward-thinking employers, including Nevada Federal Credit Union, www.nevadafederal.org, has been named to the AARP list of 2008 Best Employers for Workers Over 50. Stanley Consultants, who operate an office in Las Vegas, also ranked among the top 50 employers for those over 50. The complete list can be found at www.aarp.org\bestemployers.

“Corporations, educational institutions and health care employers are increasingly recognizing the importance of innovative policies - such as using senior placement agencies and websites - as they seek to retain and recruit experienced workers,” said AARP Nevada Spokeswoman Deborah Moore.

“Nevada Federal Credit Union has demonstrated progressive policies and programs for workers over 50, and has earned the honor,” added Moore.

Nevada Federal Credit Union offers a variety of creative programs for their workers, including innovative wellness programs offered to full as well as part time employees and the option to shift from full time to part time on a permanent or temporary basis. (See one page sheet on the employer or check with the press contact at the company.)

“Being named on the AARP list of 2008 Best Employers for Workers Over 50 is an incredible honor. Nevada Federal is a great place to work thanks to all of the wonderful people of all ages that work for this organization and support our outstanding corporate culture,” states Michael Traficanti, NFCU senior vice president of human resources.

Other employers which were acknowledged by AARP for their outstanding programs include Cornell University, which finished first; Scripps Health of San Diego, which finished second, and S. C. Johnson and Son, Inc. of Racine, Wisconsin, third. S. C. Johnson was first in 2007. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) became the first federal agency to receive the AARP honor since the program began in 2001. NIH finished eleventh.

The Best Employers winners, and the winners of a separate International Innovative Award, will be honored at a dinner on October 7 in Chicago. (The list of international winners can be found on the Best Employers website cited in the first paragraph.) A CEO roundtable will also be held that day, focusing on AARP’s new Workforce Assessment tool and the critical need to manage talent and anticipate future employee needs.

AARP The Magazine will feature the 2008 Best Employers in its November-December issue, in homes September 25, along with an extensive feature story on recareering and discovering new passions at age 50+. The complete article and list can also be found online at www.aarpthemagazine.org.

AARP invites employers to apply for the Best Employers honor by submitting an electronic application outlining their exemplary policies and practices toward 50 and over workers.

Candidates are vetted to ensure that practices meet the needs of mature workers. Key areas of consideration include: recruiting practices, opportunities for training, education and career development; workplace accommodations; alternative work options, such as flexible scheduling, job sharing, and phased retirement; employee health and pension benefits; retiree work opportunities, and training and development.

AARP Thanks Congress for Keeping Medicare Fair, Overriding White House Veto
Bipartisan Bill Improves Low-Income Help and Boosts Quality through National E-Prescribing, Helps Ensure Access to Doctors

SUMMARY: Today the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate voted overwhelmingly to override a White House veto and pass important Medicare legislation.  The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act will improve Medicare’s low-income programs, boost health care quality with a system of national e-prescribing, and help ensure the access of patients to their doctors.

“Today’s vote is a victory for the 44 million Americans who depend on Medicare, and we applaud Senator Reid and Representatives Berkley, Heller and Porter for  their continued support,” said Barry Gold, Nevada director for government relations. “This bipartisan legislation will help more Americans afford their health care bills while bringing doctors offices and pharmacies into the 21st century with e-prescribing.”

Gold added: “We are disappointed that Senator Ensign voted against this important legislation.  This bill would begin to bring down health care costs for millions of Americans, while reducing dangerous drug interactions with electronic prescriptions.”

AARP has been advocating for several months to ensure that lawmakers keep Medicare fair for the people who depend on it when Congress addresses physician payment cuts.  AARP has also been advocating for this bill’s improvements to Medicare, particularly the low-income programs and electronic prescribing.

Since launching the “Keep Medicare Fair” initiative in April, AARP’s grassroots volunteers and activists have sent more than 1.2 million messages to Congress and the White House.  As part of this effort, an AARP survey released May 19 found that of adults 50-plus, 81 percent oppose additional increases to Medicare premiums and 66 percent are less likely to vote for a Member of Congress who supports those increases.

AARP notified the 110th Congress that it was tracking roll call votes on key legislation important to its 39 million members and reporting the outcomes of these votes back to its members.

“We believe people make the right choices when they understand the issues and positions taken by their elected officials.  AARP intends to ensure that its members get that information,” Gold concluded.
