Second place just won’t do
Spelling Bee open to anyone age 50+

What motivates a 58-year-old man to learn the contents of an entire dictionary? Winning.

Although he’s proud of his second-place finish last year, Randy Hilfman plans to do one better this time. The Seattle-area copy editor for Eddie Bauer wants to win AARP The Magazine’s National Spelling Bee June 14 in Cheyenne, Wyo.

He’s not alone in his quest for glory, but he doesn’t seem to mind having some competition.

“It was invigorating to be around so many people who loved words and the English language, and relished the opportunity to demonstrate their spelling skills,” Hilfman says. “It was exciting to compete on a national stage.”

Anyone age 50 or older (except previous winners) can compete.

The Bee was created in 1996 by a group of AARP members from Cheyenne who wanted a fun way to challenge their peers to keep their minds sharp as they age. It has grown over the years, welcoming spellers from nearly every state and Canada too.

While Hilfman and others study intensely, many spellers compete just for fun. Regardless of the motivation, Hilfman says studying for spelling bees offers long-term benefits.

“When preparing for them, you inevitably discover many other words you can incorporate in everyday conversation and in your e-mails, letters and other writing,” he says. “It’s an enjoyable, satisfying way to expand your vocabulary.”

Pam Leininger of Durango, Colo., plans to give Hilfman a run for his money. She will be a novice competitor, but also has been studying for about a year. “No matter how I do at the Bee, I want to say, ‘Thank you, AARP.’ You gave me a reason to challenge myself, and I’ve never felt more alive, smarter or younger!”

More than $1,000 in prizes is up for grabs, and the winner will be flown to New York City to appear on national television.

The 13th annual Bee will be held Saturday, June 14, 2008, at the Little America Hotel and Resort in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The hotel is offering discounted room rates and a free round of golf for spellers and those planning to watch the bee. Hotel reservations can be made by calling 1-800-445-6945. Other lodging options can be found through the Cheyenne Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at Cheyenne.org or by calling 1-800-426-5009.

Registration costs $25 per speller and can be done at aarp.org/SpellingBee or by calling the University of Wyoming Events Line at 1-877-733-3618. Family and friends are welcome to attend and cheer on the spellers (or “unofficially” test their own spelling skills from the audience).

More information, including study and travel tips and a video of the Bee, is available at aarp.org/SpellingBee.

The Bureau of Insurance has received information that Maine consumers are being solicited over the telephone for low cost Medicare supplement insurance.  The caller asks for personal information such as Medicare ID number or social security number.

People should not give out this information over the telephone.  Anyone with questions about insurance solicitations can call the Bureau of Insurance at 1-800-300-5000 to determine if the solicitor is licensed in the State of Maine.

Carrabec High School of North Anson, Maine was unanimously chosen as the winner of AARP’s Ethel Percy Andrus Award for Innovation, for their "Will Power" Program.  Every morning, by 6:00 a.m., a fifth of the student body and a growing number of faculty and community members gather in the gymnasium for a rigorous physical and mental workout!  In addition to the physical regimen, the program provides morning tutoring for challenged students, a focus on personal goal setting and group support for overcoming challenges in multiple life arenas. Participants give back to the community through volunteer and fundraising activities throughout the year. Participants in the Will Power Program have an average GPA of 84.64 compared to a school average of 79.53.  Course failure rates for the school have dropped sharply with Will Power students leading the way.  To celebrate their achievement, two ceremonies were held on March 13, one at the North Anson high school and one at the State House.  The celebration included participation by Governor John Baldacci, who proclaimed March 13 as AARP 50th Anniversary Day.  Fifty of the Will Power student participants came to the Augusta State House for a day of festivities, that included a reading of sentiments by the House and the Senate; a tour of the State House; lunch with AARP Staff, volunteers and community members; a press conference for the $10,000 check presentation attended by local legislative representatives and covered by local media and a ceremonial cutting (and eating!) of an AARP 50th Anniversary birthday cake.  For more information, contact:  Phyllis Cohn, ASD Communications, 207-791-3901 or pcohn@aarp.org.

Please join us at the State House to oppose deep budget cuts
Wednesday, March 12th, 10-12:30

Join hundreds of other Mainers at the State House on Wednesday, March 12 from 10-12:30 for a large media event to ask lawmakers to find a better way for Maine!, and

Visit the www.mainecandobetter.org website where individuals can sign a petition, send emails to their legislators, and learn more about the budget cuts.

If we act now we can make an important difference, both in how the legislature handles the current budget shortfall, and in the long-term well-being of our communities.

We’re trying to get as many AARP members there as possible wearing our signature red AARP T-shirts.  If you would like to attend on behalf of AARP please call Greg Cross @ 791-3902.

THIS WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!  THANK YOU!

The rally at the Maine State House was a great success. To quote the Portland Press Herald, "The crowd at the rally, which Democratic Sen. John Martin of Eagle Lake described as the biggest he’s seen at the State House in some 40 years as a legislator, was so large that Capitol Security threatened to evacuate the building as a safety precaution if the protesters did not clear the stairways and exits."  The rally brought in well over 1000 people!
