Recycled shopping bags

Recycled shopping bags
These bags were made from plastic shopping bags and are washable and very strong. I think it is a good way to use some of the plactic that would otherwise be going into the trash.

I love the new interest in this project. The more these bags get used the more they don't end up in landfills

I keep saving the bags our newspaper comes in plus our plastic shopping bags. Someday I'll get around to trying this. I've seen instructions on-line. I think I've even seen a booklet somewhere in one of the craft stores. I read an article somewhere that a woman made bedrolls out of strips of plastic bags and handed them out to street people to sleep on. Another one said she made a mat with them and that you just rinse them off with water to clean

I don't know how to follow a pattern so I just start with a chain of 25 and do about 12 or 15 rows and use that as a bottom to my bag then I just work around the outside of my rectangle and when its about 14 inches tall I make a handle.
Any simple bag pattern would do I would think

Where would we get a pattern for doing these?

The best colors come from the bags that the newspapers get delivered in. It takes quite a few of them to complete a shopping bag, say about 90 to 100

We always need a tote for library books or groceries or those little odds and ends we carry. This is a great way to make them and use up those darn bags! Thank you ~ I'll give this a try!

Yes, crocheted. in any pattern that will give you a container. You just fold the bags flat and cut cross strips so that you have loops. Hook the loops into a chain and roll into a ball. the strips should be at least an inch wide to get the strength you want. almost any plastic bag will work. I use a lot of grocery bags and news paper bags. I hate tossing them in the trash

What a wonderful idea!! You have to tell me more about how you do this, I would love to learn. Are they crocheted? Please, tell me more!
