Cookies!

18 02 2008

I love cookies…I admit that. If you know me, you know that though I am a dance and fitness mommy for several wonderful folks, I love cookies. Now let me clarify…I do not love just any cookies. Like most in my generation, I love homemade cookies or fresh cookies. Why? (when Oreos are so good?) It’s like cookies this…they evoke thoughts of times when neighbors sent cookies to welcome you into the neighborhood. Times when money was scarce (non-existent) but there was sugar flour, eggs love and time so the gift was something from the kitchen that said “you are special”…”you rock”…”I love you” ….”I want to get to know you” (enough to mess up my kitchen, watch the oven, and give you cookies I want to eat myself)

Weirdly, this blog entry is not about that…it is about cookies someone has given to me! Not me personally….friend mommy crazy redhead…but me the BUSINESSWOMAN…wow!!! These cookies were thank you cookies from an organization/individual and from a customer who I went a wee bit out of my way to assist…(and both in one week!)

In both cases I did a little driving out of my way at a very busy time to drop off a forgotten costume piece for a child and then in the other case, picked up a costume a bit early that was needed for a Christmas Parade. Neither was a huge inconvenience but the payoff was Yummy….for the child I was repaid with scrumptious chocolate chip muffin style cookies with a reeses mini peanut butter cup in the middle…slurp!!! In the other case, the dropped off goody was soft melt in your mouth sugar cookies from a local bakery….gone in a flash!

Now this may sound like a description of how much I like cookies but it is not…It is a reminder that we often will not give the gift of time or just plain cannot give that gift…but when we do, the payoff is GREAT….it is cookies…in the form of a kind word, an appreciative smile, and a new friend or if you are very lucky….you’ll get COOKIES!!!!

OK, so my mom and I are in Starbucks and patiently waiting our turn in the line, when I realize the hold up…both folks at the counter are on their cell phones while the poor barista is trying to communicate with them.  Are they so important that they cannot get off the phone long enough to order their coffee/pastries?  Does the person waiting on them mean so little to them that they must be rude and mean-spirited?  It is obvious to them only that they are the center of the universe.  It is obvious that no one or nothing matters to them, not even ordering their coffee…they must certainly matter to the person they are talking to on the phone or else why would it be stuck to their ear when they are at a public counter.  This is the epitome of rude self centered grotesque behavior.  You will matter more to me if you will smile, speak directly to me, and give me your attention.  Then I will do everything I can to keep the smile on your face.  But I will never do all I can toimage keep the phone on your ear.

“Do I matter to you” is a concept that was conceived by an old friend of mine in his book “Things that matter”.  One of the things that should matter to us all is each other as human beings that care.

By the way, they never got off the phone from car to counter to car again…secure in their smug indifference.  No one I wanted to know anyway…
