I?ve been a truck driver, bartender, babysitter, carpenter
I?ve traveled this country on my thumb
I?ve been a dishwasher, taxi driver, house painter, janitor
some folks have called me a bum
I?ve slept under bridges and by rivers and lakes
fought fears of sleeping with the spiders and snakes
I?ve lived without food for days at a time
and havin? friends to help me helped to ease my mind
I?ve been a salesman, a manager, house sitter, counselor
I?ve traveled this country on my thumb
I?ve been a dispatcher, bookkeeper, college prof and store clerk
some folks have called me a bum
I?ve slept in the mountains under stars in the sky
and in my dreams I was learning to fly
I?ve lived without a home for years at a time
and havin? friends to help me helped to ease my mind
I?ve been a father, son and brother, a husband, friend and lover
I?ve traveled this country on my thumb
I?ve taken stands and been a runner, I?ve lost and been a winner
some folks have called me a bum
But I learned a few things that help me get by
and in my dreams I was learning to fly
I know that I?ve been searchin' for the reason and rhyme
and havin? friends to help me?s helped to ease my mind
yeah, I?ve learned a few things that help me get by
and in my dreams I?m still learning to fly
I know that I?ll keep searchin' for the reason and rhyme
and havin? friends to help will help to ease my mind
