Our Day of Service project consisted of two separate and distinct activities.
1. Mrs. Audrey Thomas conceived this project, collected the monies( given by chapter members) and purchased books titled "No Talking", authored by Andrew Clements for, each of 23 needy fourth grade students at Stafford school in Maple Heights, Ohio. On the day of the event, each child's name was called and he or she received a book which had his/her name inscribed on its inside front page. Mrs. Audrey Thomas wanted to have a presentation so when the children took the books home, they would always remember that this was something special and maybe it would inspire some to go home and start a home library. More information about this project is given in the newspaper clipping shown in photos #18,19 and 20 in the "My Photos" tab.
2. This project was conceived and carried out by Mrs. Mary Wyderka who assembled a group of volunteers to help at the University Settlement community facility in Cleveland, Ohio. The Settlement is a United Way Agency that serves various needs of the Slavic Village/Broadway neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio. It provides a variety of needed social programs to enhance the quality of life of children, families and Seniors. Eight of our members spent several hours helping with the distribution of food for needy families. Also, four of our members spent an hour with preschoolers in the day care center reading, listening to the children and just enjoying being together until nap time. We also spent some time socializing and conversing with the seniors in the Senior Center.
Photos were taken of both activities and are shown in the "My Photos" tab.
Our Library Lane Chapter contributes much in services to our needy neighbors and families. Nine times each year we collect money and clothing and other supplies for 5 different charities. Once each year we have a "Baby Shower" for WomenKind (unwed mothers who choose to give birth). Twelve times each year we visit a nursing home to entertain the residents with bingo and celebrate birthdays with cake and drinks. In total, the chapter contributes several hundred pounds of clothing and about $1500 in cash to nine charitable organizations.
