Elaine Carpenter Journal

I am 62 years of age and am struggling with what to do next in my life.  I have been a secretary, a lawyer, a homemaker.  I am a mother and grandmother.  I have been divorced twice and find celibacy difficult.

I am very interested in hearing from others who have found meaningful lives after retirement.  I have been depressed for part of my life, but have had excellent treatment and am interested in how others have delt with this or other illnesses.

My youngest daughter died 6 years ago at the age of 35.  I don't know how to live with that knowledge.  My grandchildren are a great joy and seem to enjoy having a silly nana.

I have no answers for you. I'm going through the same thing. Retirement, relocation, ill 36 year old daughter. Want to move closer to grown children but don't know where to go. I think you are probably not unique. Maybe it will help to know there are a bunch of us out there and we will make it. Do you sometimes wonder how you got so strong. I think life is just a bingo game. When your ball is picked it's time to go. Take a day at a time. Some are better than others. Good Luck!

Thanks Poogie! Actually silly is really important to me. I think maybe a profession clown sounds good. I love children. What do you do for fun?

What do YOU want, Elaine? You've been many things, but what can you do for yourself? Take up salsa dancing lessons. Become a professional clown. Learn to read palms. I know - I'm being a bit silly (although I'd consider becoming a clown, I think!), but the point is that you can do whatever you choose. All you have to do is let yourself do it!
