Questionable subject matter is
being allowed on TV, and I am not sure how to react to it, shock,
disappointment, sadness, outrage, or confusion, possibly all of
those things and more. One thing I know, I am deeply
concerned at the direction of things. In spite of, the
passion I feel regarding this subject, I will do my best not to
become a bore about it or bang the podium overly much.
Recently, we had a Satellite
dish installed on a couple of our TV’s, as we ready
ourselves for the big change over to all digital
programming. As a bonus for signing up, we receive free
Showtime channels for several months. Not being much on the
local program stations this time of year I, have been taking full
advantage of those premium channels. As a result, I see many
commercials for the new season series programs for cable /
Satellite on Showtime. Being accustomed to the more censored
local channels and therefore unused to paid programming, I
expected it to be a somewhat more program conscientious than what
I found it to be. I realize there are the highly sexual
orientated shows and movies that you can purchase additionally
however, I had not expected these to be during early evening
hours. My father even mentioned at dinner one evening that he
was, taken aback when he turned over to watch a movie around 7:30 the previous evening to see
writhing, naked couples doing things that he considered X-rated programming.
It has come to my attention that
according to network ratings and critics the following are the top
three cable/satellite programs watched by all America. If you have not seen
them, I will supply a quick description.
#1. Dexter: About a
serial killer, (and I do not mean Tony Tiger’s frosted
flakes). This is a story about a man that works as a coroner
and in his off time, he goes around killing people. Mostly,
these are very gruesome deaths involving the tools of his trade,
knives and hatchets showing an enormous amount of
blood. Apparently, during the first season he tried to
convince himself that the people he killed were bad and deserved
to die now, it appears this new season he will be killing more for
the pleasure of it.
#2. Weeds: About a
family and close friends grow and sell marijuana in the USA. It depicts the
horticultural aspects as well as the financial and legal aspects
involving the process of growing bulk lots of the plant. This
will be the third season of this show. In the second season,
they branched out going into business with a cartel from Mexico smuggling the Marijuana through
a tunnel back and forth from Mexico to America.
#3. Californication: About
a movie and screenwriter living in Los Angeles, CA who sleeps with almost if not
all of the women he meets as if he has no control over
himself. The premise is he is trying to have a relationship
with a woman he professes to love, as he runs around town
drinking, doing drugs and having sex at the drop of a
hat. Not that he is completely to blame, the women in the
show appear to throw themselves at him non-stop.
I am shocked; the public allow
networks to broadcast these types of shows, regardless of access
type, local or paid / cable programming.
Disappointed, that regardless of
channel, the public allows this type of programming to air.
Saddened, that our morals
have dropped so low that we do not up-hold stronger censorship on
the caliber of shows that can be so easily accessed day or night
by our children.
Outraged when every day you see
and hear in the news about how murders, drugs and prostitution are
on the rise in every city in the US, a large part by our young
people, even by our children.
And confused, when we
frequently hear that TV, movies and video games are to blame so
often for street gang fights and drive by shootings and deaths,
mass murders, STD’s and child pregnancies being out of
control, that we allow and even encourage these types of programs
by watching them.
If, such a large part of the
violence and sex crimes are committed due to these programs, when
is the public going to wake up and take action? Boycott these
types of programs and write your congressperson to create and
uphold better censorship. Stop this type of programming from
being aired before; the damage is done to our young people’s
mental, physical and emotional well being.
M00n, that idea of yours about "One thing that might help us is to push for unbundling of cable packages. If consumers are permitted to choose and pay for only the channels we want" is great, who and how do you think we can get an interest for that? I would be willing to do some work to make it happen.
Deb
I agree with you 100%. Even if we are careful about the program we choose, the adverstisements are still not suitable for children. I have about 200 channels, and I can seldom find one I want to watch. I resort to reruns of old movies that I've seen about a dozen times.
One thing that might help us is to push for unbundling of cable packages. If consumers are permitted to choose and pay for only the channels we want, a lot of those channels will cease to exist, as they should
HEY GIRL. WE HAVE BASIC CABLE IN OUR HOME AND IT IS SICKENING TO SEE WHAT THEY CONSIDER GOOD TV.................EVEN IF IT ISNT PICTURED,THE LANGUAGE IS INEXCUSABLE,AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED,THE TV COMMERCIAL ADS ARE TOO REVEALING AND SEX ORIENTED,DISGUSTING IS THE TERM FOR TV VIEWING!
Hi, I agree with Deb one hundred percent. But, it appears to me
very little can be done to clean up the air waves. Repeating what
puppymom said, this seems to be what people want.
I am appalled at the childrens programming. Even in cartoons
there is much violence and / or suggestive remarks.
How about the time the children get home from school and
what at one time was aired at 9:00 is now on at 3:00 PM.
I am embarassed to have programming on when my grandchild
is here. I mean like DR. PHIL.. OPRAH.. we won't even go
there... King of Queens, Yes, Dear... all at 3:00... needless
to say we turn off anything we find offensive when she is
here. And we will turn it off if the topic is too much about sex.
Oh, and what about Mike and Juliette? I love them as a couple.
But, their program is nothing but sexual content at 9:00 AM.
So, switch channels to a more decent program until 700 Club
comes on.
Hope you don't mind my rant here.. I just agree with all of you
and had to throw my hat in the ring..LOL
Hi Deb, I also agree with you 100%. The terrible programming and lack of morality are two of the reasons why I do not watch TV. My husband does subscribe to this digital TV because it is a necessity to have any kind of television reception. So, we have to subscribe to all of this other junk to have a few basic channels in the house.
You wrote that you are "disappointed, that regardless of channel, the public allows this type of programming to air". I am sorry to say, the vast majority of the public WANT this stuff. To fight this is a losing battle unless you address the issue where YOU can control it; in your own home.
If only people used more of their mind and redirected their energies toward other hobbies. I guess it is easier to just sit in front of the "boob tube" for hours and then gripe about the lack of programming. I have been doing exactly as you suggest... boycotting the low cl****programming; I just don't watch TV! Haven't for years and I am better for it. This is a challenge when you have children though. What do you let them watch? Even on Nickelodeon, one program will be just fine then the succeeding program may be full of immorality and have suggestive comments... What is a child to think? What is going on in their little minds?
Parents need to realize what modern TV is doing to their children's minds... Turn off the TV! Spend some time with your child! Don't use the excuse that you have worked all day, are tired and don't feel like spending quality time with them. You brought a life into this world, be responsible for the children you create.
As long as the demand exists for this stuff, it will be written and aired.
Sad, pitiful nation we have become... Everything is about money.
To see the depth of the problem, one has only to Look Within! A Murder Mystery entertains us with Brutal Killings! Soap Operas dipict Adultry as Normal! Dance with the Stars show Mostly Naked Women dancing in Provacative ways. Were the Romans Gladiator Events that much worst than what we watch? How do we say it is O.K. to be entertained by watching depictions of Pain and Suffering? Art
I agree, Deb, I agree with every word! It makes me crazy that most media just continues to sink lower and lower and we sit around and settle for this garbage. Nobody seems to remember how to write well...they either write this foul trash or they try to p****un"reality shows" on to us as entertainment. What happened to all those folks who could pen an interesting story without filling in all the bizarre and graphic details? Strange, sad world we live in, and even sadder for our children...
