Such is life...

Weird thoughts from a dusty corner of my brain

Have you ever thought about why dogs eat weird things? With two dogs, I have the dreary task of being on poop patrol more frequently than I’d like.  While on my "search and destroy all poop missions" I have noticed such interesting items among the droppings.  There is the usual stuff like rocks, grass, hair, bones and small sticks.  But what really blows my mind is the weird stuff!  I’ve found foam (one of them ate his bed within a 1 hour period with no supervision).  I’ve found walnuts (whole and halves) in abundance.  Pieces of coal, carrots, nuts, eggshells, gourds, rugs, blankets, cat toys (especially the play mice), beans, bird seed of all types, plastic lids, trash bags, aluminum foil, baggies, and some things I have yet to discover what it was!

One of my beloved dogs (Booker which is not the dog in the picture) decided one day, while I was at work, to shred and eat my bills for that month which were very neatly stacked by the fireplace ready to be paid and mailed.  I came home to wall to wall shredded bills.  It looked like a shredder had blown up in the livingroom.  I decided to take pictures of the mess and post them at work.  Maybe I could rent Booker out as a paper shredder or he could be a real live excuse for some kid who really wants a dog to eat his homework.  I don’t think the companies I called concerning the incident really believed me when I tried to explain that the dog ate their bill so it may be a bit late for that month.

The same dog, (bless his little heart!) decided to eat half of my bathroom floor and part of the wall on another occasion.  I  didn’t see the humor in his choice for a snack that day.  Needless to say, I have yet to understand why dogs eat the things they do.  I think the worse thing that they eat however, are cat cookies, or cat nuggets. Gee, I wonder what favor those little smelly things are?  Do they taste like chicken?

Oh my gosh! I thought I was the only person who had a dog that ate the bathroom floor and some of the wall! They say that they are supposed to grow off of the behavior. Okay, is that after the rest of the house is eaten, or only part of the house? I no longer keep the dogs in the bathroom when I leave. With nice weather-it's the kennel...By the way, yes they dig. It looks like a battle field with pits and holes, some of which are a foot deep or so. I have pieces of steel cattle grates running along the inside perimeter of the kennel so they can't dig themselves out. However, today I noticed that they had begun to dig under the grates. Sigh! If the weather is bad, I keep Booker crated in a ex-lg crate, and Riley is long leased in another room. (Riley doesn't really destroy things when he's alone. He just follows along knowing that Booker will be the one in trouble. (smart dog!)
I exercise them, provide good food, play with them, etc...Booker just has a lot of baggage from an abusive past. Belief it or not, the crating has helped him calm down and get over some of the separation anxiety. He knows I will return to let him out. Maybe you should try it with yours. Anyway, good luck to you and happy bathroom fixing!!! (I haven't been able to fix mine yet-too expensive!)

LOVED YOUR DOG JOURNAL! I am new to being a dog mommy. 2 years ago a stray puppy turned up in my yard. Then last year 2 more puppies turned up. Couldn't find homes for them and couldn't let them starve, so I fed them and they stayed. I will never get my brain around why they eat the things they do. If I don't watch them they will clean out the cat litter pans. Act like its candy! The first dog ate all the cushions on the porch furniture. One at a time. The vet said it was separation anxiety, but offered no solutions. When the new pups turned up I would leave them in the bathroom while I was gone. (Easier to clean up their mess there.) Then Beethovan, the biggest of course, decided to eat the bathroom. More separation anxiety. He has consumed a lot of the wall in a couple of places. Doesn't seem to bother him. Bothers me a lot! I give him chew toys, and lots of food to munch on, but he still eats on the wall. Pepper, the little girl dog, has been tearing up the floor covering in one corner. Now that the weather is warming up here, they go OUT when I have to leave. Which creates other problems. Looks like I'll have to start my own journal on this! Got so excited to read about someone else's dog issues I can't stop writing.
