My Journals (2)

Cooking has always been a hobby that I thoroughly enjoy.  Now, with a new Thai daughter-in-law, I am getting the opportunity to learn a new cuisine (new to me, anyway).  In addition, I am viewing my own cooking through new eyes, and incorporating some of the flavors and cooking styles of Thailand in my dishes.  I love the aroma and flavor of Kaffir lime leaves, and would probably use it in everything if I could.

My son, with whom I live, has a new wife from Thailand.  She is studying English and becoming fairly proficient.  I have always been fairly good at learning languages, having studied Latin and French in high school, and learning Spanish on my own, so I of course would love to learn Thai.  I am finding out, however, that this is a very difficult language for me to learn.  I'm not sure whether it's because it is so completely different from anything I know, or if it's because my learning curve has dropped.  I will continue to try.  I was touched that in one of her homework assignments, the reason she gave for wanting to learn English was to be able to communicate with her husband's family.
