My Journals (19)

You're the one who will be living in your own future. It makes sense to take responsibility for that future, to make it the best it can possibly be. The time you take to think ahead, and to evaluate your decisions with an eye toward the future, can make a big difference in the quality of that future.

You have survived every single challenge that has come your way.  And when you look back on the things you've done, it is clear that not only have you survived those challenges, they have caused you to learn, to grow, to become stronger.

Interesting tidbit from the American Journal of Cardiology:

The experts all advise that if you think you're having a heart attack, the first thing you should do is chew an aspirin tablet.

But because aspirin starts to break up as soon as it touches your tongue, why chew it instead of swallowing it?

Here's why, according to the American Journal of Cardiology. Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School recruited 12 volunteers and measured the length of time it took for the aspirin to inhibit blood clotting, which is the reason to take it after a heart attack.

They found that swallowing a whole aspirin takes 12 minutes to have any effect on your blood's clotting time; drinking a liquid remedy containing aspirin takes seven minutes to work, but chewing a regular aspirin tablet shows benefits in only five minutes.

I read this about subway sickness and thought it interesting to share in my journal.  If anyone has been on a subway several times, they probably can relate:

"Subways are often crowded, likely to be dirty, and the temperature is oppressive. That's the general opinion of most people who ride the underground.  So how do you think those who work in the subways feel?  Not well, according to the Scandanavian Journal of Work and Environmental Health.  Compared to subway riders, subway drivers had four times the risk of developing sciatica pain, three times the risk of hearing loss and twice the risk of stomach problems. The sciatica and hearing problems stem from the constant noise and vibration on the job, combined with badly designed seats.  No one has ever determined exactly why subway motormen have stomach problems."

The nobler sort of man emphasizes the good qualities in others, and does not accentuate the bad. The inferior does.

To achieve anything, you must truly want it.  And that means more than simply desiring the end result.  It means you must also want to go through the process of creating that achievement.

The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.

I read this in a Health Tip and had to share it.  Where I live we've had a few accidents due to people falling asleep at the wheel.  All the accidents have been fatal.  Below is some helpful advice for those who have to drive for long hours:

The department of health sciences at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, studied which techniques really helped prevent accidents. As reported in the Journal of American College Health, they found stopping for a snack, talking to your passengers and rolling the window down were factors in preventing accidents.

But, more surprising, here's what won't help you stay alert:

  • taking a walk
  • drinking something with caffeine in it
  • stopping for a nap
  • chewing ice
