Let's see if you folks can help me with this one:

I got a call from a dear friend yesterday. She asked, "Have you ever left anything in the freezer of your RV after it was unpacked and unplugged?"

I said, "Eeeeeeww!"

She said, "Yeah, and it was in there for two weeks, and it was CHICKEN!"

I said, "Eeeeewww, Eeeewww, EEEEEEEEWWWWWWW!" And then my first suggestion was to burn the RV to the ground. But since that wasn't a good suggestion does anybody else have any ideas about how to get the smell out of their trailer? The guy at Camping World suggested she clean it with bleach and hot water but didn't really have many suggestions about the smell. He did make her feel a little better when he told her that it happens all the time and he's replaced many, many RV freezers for just that reason. We've already discussed, most of the standard smell killers but if anybody has any good ideas I'd love to pass them on to her. In the meantime if you live within 10 miles of her house you might want to keep your windows closed!!

Several years ago we had a freezer in the garage. It was filled, packed really with a side of beef and so many things... We went on vacation and had a dope come and stay at the house, to take care of our dogs and see to the house. I told him NOT to go in the freezer. Everything for him to eat was in the house freezer. We were gone a bit over a week. We pulled into the garage late one night to find a strange black mess oozing down the middle of the floor. The STINK was overwhelming..... We noticed the freezer was ajar....  Seems the dope went into the freezer to get more steaks and left the door of the freezer ajar. It was such a huge mess, he decided to play stupid and deny even knowing about it. Blah.... I just bawled. There was over $800 of food in there all rotten... My in laws came over and helped clean up the mess while the dope slept on the couch.... Actually he was a youth minister at the church my kids went to. He and the church had put out a need to find him a place to stay while he was here. Back to the freezer, we tried everything to get the stink out. Everything listed here and more. We bought some spray they use in funeral homes, where they work on the bodies. It was also used in meat packing places. Nothing worked. We put the freezer on the back porch without the door to air... nothing. My father in law made some kind of ion machine. He put the hose in the freezer and locked the freezer door shut on it. Hey, I still have the freezer! It has been about 18 yrs since the accident. Now it is in the house, freezing away. I think she should go to a fire clean up place. They can put the ion machine inside the RV. In the spirit of cleaning out stinks, Sijai

RMG:

Found this in the local newspaper a few weeks ago.  Suppose to work better than tomato juice mix for deskunking a dog so why not try it for your RV frig problem.

  • 1 qt. - 3% Hydrogin Peroxide,
  • 1/4 cup baking soda,
  • 1 tsp. liquid soap

Mix all ingredients and wash item. Rinse, clean as usual.

Note: mix on when needed.  Do Not Store Away.

I have heard about the vanilla. Another thing I didn't see mentioned was a dish of vinegar. Put Vicks (or something like that) under your nose when doing stinky jobs like that. Unless you think that is worse than 2 week old spoiled chicken!!!!!!!!!! EEEEEWWWWWW!!! I didn’t see anyone mention gloves, but that is a given!
