It was a busy weekend on Capitol Hill. In the wee hours of Saturday night, the US House of Representatives passed critical health care reform legislation. The bill will strengthen Medicare for seniors and curb discrimination by insurance companies that price millions of Americans out of affordable health coverage.

AARP announced its support for the Affordable Health Care for America Act on Thursday. The legislation meets the needs of seniors and their families by:

  • Making prescription drugs more affordable by closing the dangerous gap in Medicare coverage,
  • Adding cost-free preventative services like cancer screenings,
  • Cracking down on Medicare waste and fraud, and
  • Providing benefits to help seniors and those with disabilities live in their own homes and communities.

The House bill passed 220 to 215 - with 39 Democrats voting no.  For more details read yesterday’s story in the Boston Globe .   AARP tracked Saturday’s roll call votes.  Click here to find out how your representative voted on the Affordable Health Care for America Act.

After the vote, AARP Massachusetts State Director Deborah Banda stated , “We applaud the Massachusetts delegation for supporting this critical legislation and look forward to working with these lawmakers to pass the Affordable Health Care for America Act this year.”
