edited on February 4, 2009 02:19 AM ET . Mother doesn't want a dog. Mother says they smell, And never sit when you say sit, Or even when you yell. . And when you come home late at night And there is ice and snow, You have to go back out because The dumb dog has to go. . Mother doesn't want a dog. Mother says they shed, And always let the strangers in And bark at friends instead, And do disgraceful things on rugs, And track mud on the floor, And flop upon your bed at night And snore their doggy snore. . Mother doesn't want a dog. She's making a mistake. Because, more than a dog, I think She will not want this snake. |

Thanks one and all. I thought, among the weighty topics we write OUR poems about, we needed a little fun!

I love just about anything by Judith Viorst. Her wit combined with her 'right on' acuity make reading her poems a real treat. Has anyone read any of her 'aging' books,,,Suddenly Sixty And Other Shocks Of Later Life , I'm Too Young to Be Seventy : And Other Delusions and others. I started out years ago with It's Hard to Be Hip over Thirty and Other Tragedies of Married Life and have enjoyed her work. She also writed wonderful poems for children. A true talent!

I really enjoy the humorous aspect of your poem. Your rhythm and rhyme are also well done. Nice to read this morning.
