Went out to dinner last night with a group from our senior living park. Everyone there is retired but myself and one lady.  Both of us are looking for work.  She is not as lucky as I am. She does not have an Internet connection at home. She goes to the library and the one stop center everyday and spends hours job hunting on the Internet.  The consensus of our group was the only way to hunt for jobs is to go door to door filling out applications. I tried to explain that generally speaking hand written applications are filed and forgotten. Almost to a person the retired group said " Well I never had to job hunt, I worked all my life at/in __________ and retired from there."  It is hardest to explain that the new economy isn't available to someone not connected.  I worked for myself for 35 years and never expected the tragedy of 9/11 to destroy my business.  I have been job hunting now three times in the last 4 years.  I was unable before to take advantage of unemployment insurance till now.  It has been hard applying over the Internet and I don't know if I would be able to do it at the one stop center with everyone watching me.  This is a different world! New skills are needed every day.  It is truly learn them or go away hungry!  Perhaps there is an opportunity to help others do this.

Let me know your thoughts.

God watch over you.  It will drive us crazy but we must live in the world as it is.  I hope you find safe shelter and a job. Write when you can.CBP

Your post is very pertinant! I have no skills applicable to a hand-written application, and believe 4 of 5 unemployed persons are in the same boat!

7 years ago, when I went through a divorce and moved "home" my mother could not understand my internet applications; she still doesn't but knows I found my job in Las Vegas via internet and now understands that all positions with any corporation, whether it is Walmart or the post office, has to be done via internet.

I am coming to the end of my unemployment and am preparing to sell my possessions and move into my vehicle. The one thing I will not give up is internet connectivity. So I will have that via clear in NV and whatever service is available wherever I end up.

This is, in deed, a different world! I'll let you know how it is from the road...
