My furkid Kaylie will not/will absolutely not eat store bought treats - even those bacon things.  Since she's a really high energy mastiff/boxer young gal that needs a lot more training, I decided to make these biscuits for her & she loves them.  So training is going much better & faster.  She loves to train & can do it for hours.  She'll sit & stare at you constantly & I needed something to get her attenion.

PEANUT BUTTER BISCUITS

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup natural peanut butter, smooth or chunky
1 cup skim milk
Variation:  Add 1/2 cup of carob chips (never chocolate), or melt 1 cup of carob chips for dipping ready-made treats or for random drizzling.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In large bowl, combine flour & baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter & milk. Add wet mixture to dry mixture. Mix well until combined. Turn out dough on lightly floured surface & knead well. Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
Cut out biscuits using bone-shaped cookie cutter. Place on lightly greased baking sheet & bake for about 20 minutes or until lightly brown. After 1 minute, remove from cookie sheet & cool on rack. Store in air-tight container.

 CAROB BISCUITS
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup carob chips
1 cup peanut butter, smooth or chunky
1 cup skim milk
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup honey
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In large bowl, combine flour & baking powder. In another bowl, combine peanut butter, milk, beaten eggs, & honey. Mix well until combined. Add milk mixture to dry ingredients & mix with a hand beater. After ingredients are mixed, add carob chips by hand just until combined.
Using a teaspoon, drop cookies onto ungreased cookie sheet. Place on lightly greased baking sheet & for about 20 minutes or until lightly brown. After 1 minute, remove from cookie sheet & cool on rack. Store in air-tight container.

 CHEDDAR CHEESE BISCUITS
3 cups whole wheat flour
2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded cheese
1 egg, beaten
1 cup skim milk
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
In large mixing bowl, combine flour & garlic powder. Make a well in flour mixture & gradually stir in vegetable oil, cheese, beaten egg, & milk. Mix until well blended. Turn out dough on lightly flowered floured surface until combined. Roll out dough to 1/2-inch thickness.
Cut with bone-shaped cookie cutter. Place on lightly greased baking sheet & bake about 25 minutes or until lightly browned. After 1 minute, remove from cookie sheet & cool on rack. Store in air-tight container.

BACON BISCUITS
5 cups whole wheat flour
1 pinch garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
10 tablespoons vegetable oil or bacon fat
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup cold water
1 cup skimmed milk
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In large, bowl, combine flour, garlic powder, & salt. Make a well in flour mixture & gradually stir in 8 tablespooons vegetable oil/fat, beaten eggs, water & milk. Add remaining oil/fat as required to mix until well blended/blended. Pinch off pieces of dough & roll into 2-inch balls. Place on lightly greased baking sheet & bake about 35 or 45 minutes or until lightly browned. After 1 minute, remove from cookie sheet & cool on rack. Store in air-tight container.

You are so lucky that your dog does not like treats. My dog is very prey oriented.  He will eat all the food he can, and then some.

My dog is allergic to wheat as well as soy. I need to give him allergy shots every 3 weeks.

According to Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health For Dogs and Cats by Richard H. Pitcairn, DVM, PhD and Susan Hubble Pitcairn,

"Not only is garlic tasty to many pets, it also helps to tone up the digestive tract and discourage worms and other parasites, including fleas.  Garlic is particularly potent when it's added fresh."

I agree with the potential of wheat allergies, though, for dogs and people.

Ellie will eat any kind of treat, homemade or store bought.  She's very food focused, which is its own problem!  For training, I like to use liver treats, 100% dried liver bits. For a certified carbohydrate hound, she will do anything for liver treats, surprisingly.  ONCE I tried to make dried liver treats at home, but the house smelled like boiled liver for days.  Never again.  I'd rather buy them!

Peace, Beth.

My dogs will eat store bought treats - but I like your recipes and will certainly bake a batch for them.Kaylie is a nice looking gal - good luck with your training.

Thanks!  The first recipe is easy enough that even I will be able to make it.  This is something I have wanted to do for some time and this will motivate me to give it a try.  My dogs will eat absolutely anything which, of course, is not a good thing.  But when training, it is important to have special treats to temp them with.    By the way, Kaylie is a good looking girl.
