Day of Service
Once again, AARP staff and volunteers completed a variety of hands-on educational and direct-service projects that benefited the elderly, the disabled, and other vulnerable populations. This fall, our Day of Service 2009 projects will range from repairing and rehabilitating homes of seniors and people with disabilities to sorting clothing, assembling care packages, and packing food baskets. But you don't need to wait for the Day of Service to join! You too can support this year's Day of Service by volunteering at a local organization or by helping an elderly or homebound neighbor with basic chores and errands. I have been an AARP volunteer for two years providing medical transportation and respite care through my local caregiver organization.  All transportation costs have been provided at no cost to the recipient in need.  My personal time with an average of two to three hours per trip is donated.

Recently, I calculated my average cost is $24.00 using the latest index for mileage reimbursement and cost of gasoline out of pocket costs is $12.00 per average round trip of 40 miles.

I have been forced by recent economic events to ask for $12.00 per trip merely to cover gasoline.  Sadly, caregiving "Business" has fallen off.

What is wrong that the donor and donee are being maxed out by the failures of the current scene?
