Day of Service
Once again, AARP staff and volunteers completed a variety of hands-on educational and direct-service projects that benefited the elderly, the disabled, and other vulnerable populations. This fall, our Day of Service 2009 projects will range from repairing and rehabilitating homes of seniors and people with disabilities to sorting clothing, assembling care packages, and packing food baskets. But you don't need to wait for the Day of Service to join! You too can support this year's Day of Service by volunteering at a local organization or by helping an elderly or homebound neighbor with basic chores and errands. Group of approximately 35 members donated non-perishable food items to the Food Pantry at the Red Door Senior Citizens Center of Wichita Falls, Texas  to aide with their "Meals on Wheels" Program.

I echo the kudos and, speaking of food, am reminded of how badly soup kitchens and food cupboards need donations of non-perishable food goods.  A friend of mine who is planning a big party to celebrate her upcoming birthday has decided to ask her guests to NOT bring presents for her but instead bring donations of canned goods for a local food cupboard.  After her party,  she will collect all of the donations and deliver them to the cupboard.  I thought that was a terrific idea.
