I recently attended something called "corporate athlete" training that's designed to help people lead healthy, balanced lives. It was originally intended for professional athletes, who are always focused at being at the top of their game, but was then tweaked to apply to pretty much everyone (which explains why they let little ole me in.)

 

One interesting fact that really stuck with me was the importance of remaining active throughout the day. For many of us, this can be a tricky requirement. We might carve out a certain time of day to be "active," which is great, but the little activities in between are what help us stay energized and alert. Taking the stairs, doing stretches in between appointments, parking far away from the store and walking more--all of these things can add up to some healthy benefits.

 

What little things do you do to stay active throughout the day? Let's brainstorm!

Talk about having the best of two worlds(?).  Right next to this Computer is a Treadmill. So guess what I do when not typing away on a site.  Prefer walking out doors, but with this computer addiction, the keyboard connection isn't long enough..........Cindy  L0L

Walking is a great displine--especially if you can say that you do it every day. I love walking on weekends (when I have more free time), and sometimes I wear small weights on my wrists to add a little spice to the routine. And now that fall is in full swing, there's so much natural color to admire along the way!

Sharon, thank you first and foremost for serving our country. I hope that your knee surgery goes exceptionally smoothly! My friend just had knee surgery six months ago, and she was amazed at how far technology has come when it comes to procedures (she'd also had knee surgery back in college).

 

Stretching is so good for us, and I think we tend to undervalue its importance. It's nice to know that PBS is a good resource for this!

Ha! That's awesome. I feel like the queen of calorie-burning when I'm cleaning and rearranging around the home. Seems like that job never ends...

Hello Amy,

 

I am a disabled vet, enough that doing things athletic is really out of the question.  I actually shop for groceries though more often than I ever did.  I make smaller trips so that I'm forced to move.  Making it through a Super Wal-mart takes time that I have and forces me to walk even when my knee hurts.

 

I also just started stretching with a 6 am exercise show on PBS.  What a great way to wake up.  If you can't exercise, I've always been told to stretch because a lot of aches and pains are caused by not moving.  I used to swim and do Yoga.  I hope to one day get back to them both.  I am aware that you actually have to move to keep moving.

 

My orthoscopic knee surgery is on October 28th, so I am hopeful I can get back to doing a few things I miss after I heal.

Forget things! The upside of it, is that you have to make more trips up & down stairs putting things away & doing various little tasks!
