Writing Memoir

There is only one rule for writing memoir: You have to be honest. There are no templates, no blueprints, no other instructions. Unfortunately, this doesn't make it any easier. Here we will discuss with each other the difficult but exhilarating process of writing memoir—the worries we have, the obstacles we face, both real and imagined, and the pleasures of digging deep to find the story. There will be new assignments every month to jog memories loose, and to help banish self-consciousness, the scourge of all writers. I hope we will discover that the process of writing memoir is as valuable and important as the finished thing because of what we learn along the way. I hope we will share our concerns and our work with each other.

I will jump in and out of the discussions at least once a month. Given my limited availability online, I'm not always able to respond to personal messages. But I look forward to interacting with you all in this creative workshop of ours. Start writing.

Personally I love to read fantasy and thrillers and ... a little horror/macabre now and again ... been a Stephen King fan for many a year and found this from his website .....

There's a contest for writers and aspiring writers to use their creative writing skills in line with his newest book coming out soon - "Under The Dome."  Thought I'd just toss this out to all of you and whoever is into this genre might take an interest in writing a short story - Stephen will be reading them himself to declare the winner.  That in itself would be exciting I would think to any writer.

So I'll just leave the site address here and whoever wants to give it a shot -

GO FOR IT!!!  Hey, you never know ....

Wouldn't it be cool if one of our own here would win ...

Great idea Betsy -- I've started mine already.

If we don't even take it that far, we can all enjoy each other's stories here.

Don't worry about it--I got all excited when I saw it too. They're probably worried they'd get too many entries from the U.S.  I think we should still all write something and post them in a thread and then contact the editor about it.

SORRY ABOUT THAT FOLKS -- I knew this came out of UK but didn't realize just they could enter a story for the contest.  Maybe it was the hide and seek part that everyone could play.

But .. hopefully they'll have one similar to this for the States so maybe we should write up our stories any way and hold on to them.

AGAIN, sorry I didn't notice that - guess I just got all excited about the whole idea.  Thanks Betsy for pointing that out.

I'd love to compete in that, unfortunately the rules say it is for residents of the UK (and Wales). If anyone finds the link for a US contest, please post it!
