Could you be the target of a financial scam? The risk is especially high when financial markets are in tumult, as now – and the scam often starts with an invitation to a “free lunch.” To help catch scammers and unscrupulous “advisors,” AARP is now offering members a way to spot scams and stop them. AARP’s Free Lunch Seminar Monitor program is the “first big nationally organized push” designed to help state and federal regulators keep tabs on what’s being sold, and how, at financial seminars for older investors, said AARP spokeswoman Alejandra Owens.
AARP members can sign up to become a “Free Lunch Monitor” at www.aarp.org/nofreelunch. The web site gives AARP members checklists of what to listen for in presentations. Participants then collect handouts and other information to send to AARP, which in turn refers the information to federal and state regulators. You can send your information in to:
