General Directions:
Wash and Press your fabric. REMEMBER YOU MUST USE ONLY QUILT STORE QUALITY FABRICS! You will need Two Different Fabrics. We will be using a 1/4" seam allowance. Please double check your sewing and cutting and square up your blocks. Do not sign your blocks. We will do this block swap for 5 months starting This next week. If 10 people do the swap you will be making 3 (different) blocks each month to one recipient. Half of the quilt you will be using your own self made blocks. There are 30 blocks to this quilt. You will be finishing your own quilt and then adding the backing and batting. Only blocks will be mailed and exchanged. You will be responsible for getting them done once a month and mailed to the address you are given. The first month we will be sending a surprise to our exchange receipent.
Follow Directions 1 and 2 to make one block. The picture diagram is to the right of this.
Each block requires the following:
Fabric requirements for 1 block:
Please get at least 2 inches extra so you are not short and to allow for shrinkage.
PRINT 8" x 15" ea
cut 1 strip 4 1/2" x 15"
cut 1 strip 2 1/2" x 15"
SOLID 8" X 15" ea
cut 1 strip 4 1/2" x 15"
cut 1 strip 2 1/2" x 15"
follow the diagram to make a band from the above cuts.
follow the diagram to piece the block into a 12 " square (you will need to square this up) so there is a ¼” all around and the block is exactly 12 " to be sewn into the quilt making it a 11” inch.
please be precise. Mailing directions will follow once I have received your addresses. Mailing your blocks will always be on the 28th of each month.
Here is some info you can use: As far as fabrics. You can use fabrics that read like solid (that means very small print, but when you stand back it looks solid) for the SOLID PRINT. Your call on the color and pattern of fabric. The block will be 12 1/2" squared to be a finished 12" when the blocks are sewn together.
All good questions...It really helps me to know what everyone is thinking and to address them all because you are probably not the only one wondering. I would love to hear your thoughts back on these questions. At first I thought maybe we should have the person we are making the blocks for put in a request of what they would like. Then I wondered if it would make it to difficult for the person who was going to make the blocks. They might have to go to the store. Let me know your thoughts! I guess if you don't like a block someone sent you, you don't have to use it in your quilt...but that is part of the fun right?
1. I think the pattern and colors are your choice. This will probably be very scrappy this first time to keep it simple. I have so many more ideas for the future swaps. We will then have more control of our own quilts once this gets going!
2. Going out on a limb here but ...All colors are good. All Fabric Prints are good.
3. small dots DON'T work so well for solid fabric, unless they are tone on tone (not white on colored). Fabric that reads SOLID is when you stand back it looks solid from a distance. Usually tone on tone or very small prints does this the best when trying to read SOLID.
I was going to provide the address and then each person will take them to the mail box and send to the addresses.
