Great Scott - I love that place. The Carrie Nation National Home is there, too.
Speaking of that, I am starting a volunteer program to staff our national historic sites. This is the beginning of a long-term plan of mine that I first thought of when I found out that many of our historic landsites ae not open, or seldom, due to a lack of docents, or volunteers.
My plan is to frame is like that for the National Park Service, and many state park programs, so people traveling may stop over to staff a site as they are available, and would have a place to stay, and/or meals locally, or can be phoned if they live in the area of one, etc.
I volunteered for our parks for a long time, and wholly welcomed the "call" after a long, exhausting week in my career. They paid a pittance for mileage, and we had to funish our own tent, etc., but meals were on the house. Most often we helped rangers dump holiday trees in lakes, gave tours (after being oriented), helped in the nature centers (I wouldn't touch anything that moved and didn't talk - and more than once that was jokingly added to my phone message), and other such helpful chores, tasks over a weekend, or time available.
I have enjoyed historic centers in Allentown, PA., Eureka Springs, AK, Boston, NY, DC., VA., all over the nation, but they are no longer easy to staff and many are closed much of the time because of that. Here we are, retirees, or close to it, so what a grand way to "give back" to keep our incredible heritage alive.
