Maybe its because I like to be informed. Maybe its because I take the time & do the research before I defend a position. Maybe its because I love to learn, read & be involved. Maybe its all of the above. All I know for sure is that I'm sick to death of seeing people on the news, having people yell at me over the phone or on-line about what they feel is someone taking their health care insurance away from them!!
I've been doing my part to educate people by forwarding links to excerpts & analysis of sections of the various bills that were being discussed on capitol hill in DC, yet people were still saying it was "Obama's bill" - like it was only one bill & had been introduced by the President! How ignorant! They don't even understand how the process of debating an issue between the House & Senate can result in several different bills going to all kinds of committees where the debates continue until only 1 bill is left standing. The final bill usually is quite different than the initial bill that was proposed due to all the debates & research that is done during its travel time through the entire process.
Some people took a few words here or there out of context, added a twist, then espoused it on radio, TV, Twitter, newspapers - everywhere - just to get people upset. I couldn't believe it the first time I heard a lady say she had heard that people over 65 would be made to discuss end of life euthanization as an option instead of getting an illness treated! Can you believe this! That, alone, drove me to go on-line to find the latest summary of the bill that Congress had left in committee while they took their August break. Some of the other misinformation being bantered around was just as nonsensical. I find it hard to believe that anyone could imagine, let alone condone some of the stories I heard!
Well, my blood pressure is up with all this, so I better take a break & calm down before I compose any more e-mails or letters to the editor asking people to go to official government websites to read the bill, or at least the sections that refer to whatever subject they think they know they are talking about, so they can truly educate themselves on what the bill says & its true purpose - to insure all Americans, to lower health costs, to provide better preventative care, to take the insurance companies out of their current role as middlemen between doctors & their patients, to create a more efficient computerized system so unnecessary tests, surgeries, medications, etc. are not charged to, or done on, a patient.
Please, please, please - do the research before you start screaming nonsense at me or anyone else. Thank you!
