Building Your Profile Help Topic

When you first register for AARP.org site, you will receive a Congratulations message on your screen. You can then click on the red Button that says – Start Building My Profile:

If you click on this link it will take you to the following page where you can fill in your personal information. If you are not sure what you want to add here – do not be concerned you can edit this information at any time in the future. This is not required information so you do not have to fill in every field, just the ones that interest you.

Once you have completed the first page click on the red Save and Continue button.

You will then be taken to the next page – Tell us more about yourself. This is where you can upload a photo for your profile. Again, if you are not ready to choose this option you can add a photo a later time.

About Me: The first section will be highlighted on your Profile page – you may wish to include a paragraph that is a good description of yourself that others may find interesting.  Again all of this information can be edited at a later time.  If you are not sure what you would like to write, we will explain how to return to this later.

Once you have completed filling this out, click on Save and Finish.  This will bring you to your profile page:

This page shows your personal profile – if you do not have a picture loaded then you will see a blue silhouette placeholder as shown in the example above. You can add a profile photo at any time by looking under the profile picture and selecting the Edit button. This will bring up the “Edit My Profile” page.

This page contains all of the information you gave during the registration process. It also gives you the option to choose your privacy settings with the options to Show or Hide. You can update this information any time as long as you are logged into www.AARP.org. Just remember to hit the SAVE button at the bottom of the page if you have made any changes.

You can also make changes to your profile preferences under the Settings button beneath the profile picture.  If you click on this button, the following page will appear:

This area also allows you to hide your profile from the Search function on www.AARP.org and sign up for FREE eNewsletters.  If you scroll down further you will see the Notifications section:

This area will allow you to have notifications sent to the email address you used during registration, or sent to you through your profile on www.AARP.org or both. We recommend having both options selected for all items until you get familiar with the site and then making changes to your preferences at a later time. Again – you must remember to click on the Save Changes button before proceeding. When you click on the Save Changes button the page will refresh and you will see red text at the top of this page that says Your changes have been saved.

The other area under your profile that you can update is the About Me section. You can edit this by clicking on the About Me tab.

You can edit the About Me area by clicking on the Edit About Me button and making the changes you wish. Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page when you are finished.

Now that you know how to Build Your Profile it’s time to learn more – visit our Community Help group to find out more.

Please complete each field with your information.  If you are not sure what one of the field are or need additional information click on the ? mark next to the box to learn more.

There are two words that are required in the security field – if you cannot read them clearly you can click on the top blue button to the left to have these words reset.

You must click on the second box to accept the site’s terms of service in order to complete the registration process.

If you are successful with this registration process you will then be taken to a new page like this one:

You can then choose to go back to aarp.org and explore the site or to start building your profile.

If you receive an error on this page – let’s look at some of the reasons this may have occurred.

You will note that the error page will have a list of the errors at the top and the field titles will also change to RED.  There are a few fields that require specific information such as the words that are displayed in the box – there has to be a space in between the two words.  The zip code field will only accept 5 digits, if you have more than five numbers or are located outside of the U.S. please send an email to community@aarp.org for assistance.

If you have re-entered this information and are still receiving an error message, please call our help area at 1-866-839-0463 between 9:00 a.m and 7:00 p.m. ET.

We know that the adventure of using a new web site can be wonderful or frustrating, especially the first couple of times that you use it. We've set up forums for you to ask questions about specific features of the site. This journal is all about your experiences on the site, the good, the bad, the funny, and the frustrating...

Please feel free to share your experience and tips in using this site with us here. We'll update this journal frequently with announcements and other content of interest to our members. But this journal is for you to help others (and us) understand how you are using the site and what you'd like to be able to do.

Thanks for visiting, we hope to hear from you!
