RIDING WITH THE TOP DOWN

I have a little red sports car.  1994 Mazda Miata.  I got it for my 60th birthday, a gift to myself.  It’s not my first, long time ago I had a MGB. What a fun car that was for a single 23 year old who had just been let loose from the Air Force.  Memory of that MG is part of the reason I got the Miata.  It started something in me that has never died, riding with the top down. What could be more fun?

It makes me happy and my grandson loves it.  Riding along with the sun on me, the wind blowing all around and the Jimmy Buffett music turned up loud so you can here it over the wind makes me smile.

I’ve noticed this spring that it invites comments and short conversations from people on the road.  People that would normally never even look at me roll down their windows and want to talk.  I’ve been getting a lot of, "Nice car", "That looks like fun", "Beautiful day", "Wish I had one of those" and "Great day to put the top down".  I turn the radio down a bit, smile and answer.  It seems to make them happy to see me happy.  Is happy contagious?  I’m beginning to think so.  I know it is not permanent but they do drive off with a smile.  Maybe they take it home with them.  I hope so.

Maybe all cars should be able to put the top down.  Then we all could sit at red lights and talk to each other and smile.  Works for me.

Nice car indeed! My hubbie and I bought a Toyota Solara convertible a few years back and since then, as spring draws nears, we can't wait to get it back on the road, top down. It's probably not as cool as the Miata (OK, I know that it isn't) but it does have a back seat roomy enough for our Golden Retriever, Sophie. She loves to ride with the top down. We thought she might be frightened the first time, but not a chance. She sits back there, regally, with her ears blowing back in the wind and a happy doggie grin on her face. I think we'll take the convert down to the CT shoreline today! Sunny, verdant, hot lobster rolls waiting.

My very first new car was a convertible, drove it off the show room floor! My Dad was miffed, said I should have bought a station wagon-BOO! Since then(1963) I've had a great big one, another mid size, a Jeep(that I still have) and my current Volvo, a red one with a tan top. We love it and plan on going up to the northeast in the fall this year or next and drive around looking at all the colors, with the top down-of course. My wife was driving in Tucson with the top down, stopped at a light, when a homeless guy with his shopping basket full of belongings walked by, stopped, looked at her, looked at the car, gave her a thumbs up and a "nice car lady!" She sat taller for the next few miles! Don't want to be without one.

I fully understand I have a 95 Chevrolet Camaro convertible. I get comments from youngsters asking what is an old lady like you driving such a buzz car. And I reply first you have to get to my age to appreciate a real convertible and I am at the age I will fully enjoy it. They just kind of meander off into their fog of what did she mean by that. Love the wind in my hair and sometimes an occasional bug in the teeth.

OH YEAH! Last month I bought a '96 Montego Blue Miata MX-5. For me its the Beach Boys on the 12 CD changer (came with the car) up loud enough to hear over the wind and other traffic. Just thinking about the car and driving topless makes me smile. I had a British Leyland Rover in the 80' and got the same kind of reactions from others. They are always smiling when they comment. That can't be bad! I'm waiting for summer to take Hwy 1 up & down the CA coast in my 2 seater. Keep on smilin'. Chris

I once read that one of the rules of life is "at least once in your life, own a convertible". I've owned a convertible for a while now and fully understand that "rule". There's nothing quite like driving with the top down and feeling the warm sun on your face and the wind in your hair. It's therapy for the soul.

Got my first Green 2000 in 02 and when it was wrecked in 04. bought an Aqua 02 the next day. I also find that people in restaurants, parking lots, and everywhere (including my work) ask about the car and start conversations! And I love it!! I call it my Harley with an optional top, heater, and a/c. And my granddaughters are transformed in waving, smiling beauty queens in a parade! Nothing makes a day better than riding with the top down!!! Oh, and mine was the first in my neighborhood, now there at at least 8. Ride On! krellnerj
