Sounds like you have a little piece of heaven already. I love the Rangely area...very nice! The family and I go camping a lot at Black Brook Cove in Oquossoc. My son and I like to go ATVing in the Coos Canyon area as well.
Maybe after I get wild and crazy and can afford the cost of diesel in the truck again, for the moment I'm still around Rangeley - took me 19 years to find a camp on Mooselook and I'm still renovating it. Pictures are in folder Perpetual restoration on my page. I hope that within two more years I can actually get to go fly fishing or take the boat out more than 4 times in a season.
Last time I was in Jackman it was after crossing the border from a family reunion in Quebec and Montreal more relatives than you could shake a stick at.
100 were invited and 3000 showed up, went from a classroom at Lavalle University to an ice rink in Montreal - about 1983. I really liked Jackman but, I'm in Paradise on Earth at Upper Dam Pool 100 yards from my front door.
Enjoy
I can see why you would guess western Maine...it does resemble the area. Actually this picture was taken in the Jackman area. You can get a similiar view at a rest stop just off 201 before you get into Jackman. My son and I were on an atv trail near the rest stop at the time. Some folks call it "The Switzerland" of Maine
