When I first came across this video from a trip to Costa Rica, I got rather excited as I thought I had footage of an Ivory-Billed Woodpecker. After some research, and close inspection of the markings, I learned that it's actually a Lineated Woodpecker. It looks very similar to the Pileated that we have in North America. Lineated Woodpecker on Wikipedia
At first I thought (hoped) it was an Ivory-Billed. I later thought it was a Pale-Billed, but that was incorrect too ... it's actually a Lineated Woodpecker
That is awsome! That is definitely an Ivory-billed Woodpecker! The Pileated is about the same size and coloring, but does NOT have the Ivory bill! They have said this bird was near to extinction. I'm so glad to see the proof that they are still here! I get Pileated Woodpeckers at my suet feeder in pairs. Would love to see this bird. Did you say you saw it in Costa Rica? Or was it in Virginia where you live?
I'm from Medina Ohio, and am new to this group, but it looks like fun. I've been an avid birder for years, and so enjoy it. Although it gets a bit expensive keeping my feeder filled and stocked, its the best hobby I've had. I'm a flight attendant and keep my eye to the sky no matter where I am
Amazing video- thanks for sharing. It does look like the pileated woodpecker. We are seeing so many of the pileated here in the Laurel Highlands of PA. I have seen five in different areas!
When My kids were small, my daughter woke up to a woodpecker similar to this at her bedroom window. He sounded like an airhammer tearing the house apart. She still has a phobia of woodpeckers to this day an she is 33 years old! Such a beautiful bird! I am retired from U. S. Fish and Wildlife where the woodpecker saga still rages and I would like to forward your video to my former office. The people there would love it!
