Strength Through Weakness
2 CORINTHIANS 12:7-11

Our culture values independence and personal ability but sees weakness as a failure. The biblical viewpoint, however, is the exact opposite: Scripture teaches that when we recognize our lack of strength, we become more keenly aware of our need for God.

As we know, everyone has shortcomings, and the apostle Paul was no exception. In today's passage, we read his acknowledgement of the "thorn" that was constantly harassing him. The Bible does not tell us whether this was a physical problem, a struggle with temptation, or some other weakness; all we know is that Paul prayed fervently for its removal. But the Lord chose to let the irritant remain.

Amazingly, the apostle responded with contentment concerning the very difficulty he had begged God to remove (v. 10). He realized that the Lord had changed a hindrance into a glorious revelation: Paul's deficiency became the pathway and showcase for God's magnificent power.

The thorn, it turns out, also had a second purpose--as an "immunization" to protect against pride. The Holy Spirit impacted the world so greatly through Paul that he could easily have exhalted himself. A lack of humility would have negatively impacted his ministry.

Would we prefer to have our "thorn" removed? Humanly speaking, of course we would! But we can trust that, regardless of our circumstances, our loving heavenly Father is working something beautiful into our lives. Our response to hardship and weakness should be, "Lord, what are You trying to teach me in this situation?"

                                              The Secret

One day, one friend asked another,
"How is it that you are always so happy?
You have so much energy and you never seem to get down."

With her eyes smiling, she said,"I know the Secret!"

"What secret is that?"

"I'll tell you all about it,
but you have to promise to  share the Secret with others."

"The Secret is this:
I have learned there is little I can do
in my life that will make me truly happy.
I must depend on God to make me happy and to meet my needs.
When a need arises in my life,
I have to trust God to supply according to HIS riches.
I have learned most of the time
I don't need half of what I think I do.
He has never let me down.
Since I learned that 'Secret', I am happy."

The questioner's first thought was,
"That's too simple!"
But upon reflecting over his own life
he recalled how he thought a bigger house
would make him happy, but it didn't!
He thought a better paying job
would make him happy, but it hadn't.
When did he realize his greatest happiness?
Sitting on the floor with his grandchildren,
playing games, eating pizza or reading a story,
a simple gift from God.

Now you know it too!
We can't depend on people to make us happy.
Only GOD in His infinite wisdom can do that.
Trust HIM!
And now I pass the Secret on to you!
So once you get it, what will you do?

YOU have to tell someone the Secret, too!
That GOD in His wisdom will take care of YOU!

But it's not really a secret...
We just have to believe it and do it...
Really trust God!

Presently you may have doubts
You'll  ever be successful.
Things that are occuring "now"
make our live's more stressful.

It is Satans work on earth
to sink us in the "mire".
Just remember GOD has said,

the devil is a liar!

What's the use in working hard?
It seems there's no way out.
Confusion is abounding
and our minds are filled with doubt.

Unemployment on the rise
our futures seem more "dire".
Keep in mind what GOD has said;
the devil is a liar!

We may feel discouraged
with the burdens we are sharing.
Convinced that our elected leaders
really aren't caring.

They would tell you All Is Well
till their terms "expire".
Hoping that you'll keep them "there".

The devil is a liar!

Don't be misled by lying lips,
our GOD'S help, is real.
HE is always in control
no matter how we feel.

Spend each waking moment,
and at night when we "retire"...
Recalling what our GOD has said;

the devil is a liar!

Will we all... be able to...
survive the latest threat?
Will we find the tools required
to insure they're met?

Will our needs be satisfied,
world crisis growing "higher"?
GOD said "HE" will meet our needs...

the devil is a liar!

What then must we do while waiting?
How to spend our day?
I recommend we all assemble
and earnestly do pray.

LORD JESUS please come quickly
as days here "expire".
We in turn will not forget

the devil is a liar!

Be advised... GOD'S noticed...
all our problems now at hand.
HE'S... aware of all our plights...
the evil one has planned.

GOD will thwart his wickedness
and place him in the "fire".
Don't forget one single moment,

the devil is a liar!

He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
John 8:44

"CIRCUS" written by my mother-in-law for a college english class. Her dream was to be a college graduate.  She fulfilled her dream at the age of sixty in 1976.

Gone is the carousel of youth,
The music's pulsing beat
That with a mad, compelling tune
Spurred on my dancing feet.

The circus tent is patched and worn,
The music all has died.
Gone, too, the prancing steeds and clowns
Who left me starry-eyed.

Round and round the world I flew,
Chasing the golden ring.
Clutching at last in eager hands
A cheap and paltry thing.

More than my carousel there was,
Dear Lord, I knew it not
Till on reluctant knees
I read the lessons that You taught.

O Truth, O Beauty, now I knew
I thank You that I learned,
Though time and time my treacherous heart
For tarnished tinsel yearned.

You were the joy I thirsted for,
How blind who could not see
That in my search for happiness
I wanted only Thee!

Recently I overheard a father and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure.  Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the father said, 'I love you, and I wish you enough.'

The daughter replied, 'Dad, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Dad.'  They kissed and the daughter left.

The father walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by asking, 'Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?'

'Yes, I have,' I replied. 'Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?'.
'I am old, and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be for my funeral,' he said.

'When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough.' May I ask what that means?'

He began to smile. 'That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone...' He paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail, and he smiled even more. 'When we said, 'I wish you enough,' we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them.'

Then turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory.

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good- bye.

He then began to cry and walked away.
