I'm so bored since I took my retirement a year and 1/2 ago at age 62. My husband and I aren't rich enough to trival all the time so I've been looking for a nice part time job to fill my time. Bad news is I can't find one. I live in Flemington, New Jersey and becaue of the gas prices I don't want to travel far for part time work . In my position (when I was working) my income was $60,000/year. I was a credit coordinator for a chemical company. After 27 years working there in serveal postions I just couldn't take any more of the garbage at work...you know what I mean. I found all my co-workers fun to work with but upper management was getting too goofy. I just had to leave.
Now I need to find a job to help with our income and also to keep me from going out of my mind!!
It seems that the interviews I go on go very well but I never here back from any one.
Hey guys how about driving a school bus. The company I work for has several people who used to make a lot of money and are now drivers. So give any school district a call and they will tell you where to get your license
Finding work right now is a real problem especially for older adults. I'm still working FT and am currently hiring. I have received more than 60 applications for a $20,000/year job. We have interviewed several older people for the position but are not considering any of them. (I would love to hire and older individual.) One of the primary flaws is the lack of computer skills. (We are very busy and don't have time to teach these skills) The other is attitude. Many responded that they were just looking for something to do, wanted to supplement income or needed benefits. I'm looking for someone who has at least looked at our web page, who has an interest in the job, who has at least done some reading about the our industry. Employers are looking for knowledge, enthusiasm and engagement. I'm not sure if you fall into this catagory but make sure you prepare for the interview and keep your technology skills up to date
There are only two things to do in life. You either go to work or go to school. When people are out of work the college's enrollment is high, when every one is working the college's enrollment is low, and we have to beg people to come to school. Look into financial aid and learn to be a professional student. You just might have fun in the process and learn a new trade. Remember there are certificates that you can get for little or no money. I wish you all the best.
No ideas nor suggestions yet, as it pertains to finding employment with an employer . In this current time of economic recession, finding almost any type of work is difficult, if not almost impossible for many of us in any line or category of work. Times are just to difficult presently. Better time may be ahead but don't count on it for those of us in our age groups.
Unfortunately, age does have a considerate factor against finding work, full or part time. Regardless of who tells you otherwise. Often those whom paint a positive image or picture of the potential of finding work at our age, the over 50 group, the fact of the matter is it's almost impossible.
Those whom offer positive potentials and encouragement are more often then not currently employed themselves or they are paid employees of unemployment agencies or human resources personnel of the states unemployment agency, etc. That's their job to be positive and look on the bright side.
Same applies to hired head hunters and or resume writers. Be very cautious of both head hunters (those whom you personally hire and pay to find you a job) and resume writers, etc. Which also includes employment agencies you pay to find you work. If any of the above have something financially to gain from you, think twice before hiring them!
However, if it is of any comfort to you, you're not alone by any means. Thousands, if not millions, are in the same boat as you. Early retired and out of work. With little or no near future possibility of finding full time or part time work.
Possible solution. If there is something you presently do, as a service to or for someone or something you make, create or enjoy doing, that can be a benefit to someone else, might be possible to make that a potential source of income. The lists are endless. Think of what you're presently doing to past some time or you can and like to do, that can be sold or marketed to others as a potential income source for yourself. Good Luck.
