hi oldkayaker; your name seems familiar to me, from having been on the OLD aarp site? Is that correct? I am just learning my way around on this new site. Big Toe has been trying to help me so slowly, I am getting used to it Not sure I like it as well as the old one though.
You say you are leaving for St. Joe bay in the Florida panhandle soon. I am heading to the panhandle at Ft. Walton Beach, sometime in June. Trying to prepare myself for the heat, as I live in the mountains of Virginia, and we have nice cool weather here.

That's wonderful news, Earl. I'll be praying that physical therapy won't be needed for I know you're anxious to get paddling again:>). I'm not familiar with St. Joe Bay though I attended college in Pensacola years (and years!) ago....beautiful white sand beaches. Loved that but hated the humidity and the water bugs that seemed the size of small children! Bette

Hi Earl,
It' good news that he was able to remove all the cancerous cells. I don't believe in coincidences either.Possibly if you had not been stung, the skin cancer may not have been noticed by you until it was a bit further along. My husband died of a rare form of cancer in which he did not meet the criteria of susceptibility. Coincidence? No. But the "why" leaves me sleepless still. The pictures of OBX makes me sooooo "homesick":>). Are you planning a trip for this summer?
Take care,
Bette

Bette, I don't have much time right now but wanted to post this:
"SCCs may also occur where skin has suffered certain kinds of injury: burns, scars, long-standing sores, sites previously exposed to X-rays or certain chemicals (such as arsenic and petroleum by-products). In addition, chronic skin inflammation or medical conditions that suppress the immune system over an extended period of time may encourage development of the disease." I find it easier to accept misfortune when I am able to determine probable cause.

I'm leaving for St. Joe bay in the Florida panhandle just as soon as the doctors turn me loose. Earl

Stitches removed today. Everything looks good. Check up in three weeks at which time I must have regained full range of motion or else start physical therapy at that time. I think I will be paddling again in three weeks!

I see you haven't posted anything about your visit to the Dr. Tuesday. I hope all is well.

Hi Bette, Thanks for asking. The doctor removed the stent, said everything looks good, wrapped it up again and sentenced me to another week of "don't bend the hand and don't get it wet." The stitching comes out next Tuesday. The lab results were positive for skin cancer but also indicated he had removed all of it so no further treatment is required. I asked if there was any relationship between the insect injury and the cancer and was told no. I have fixed things my entire life and do not believe in coincidence except in extremely rare instances. I will do a little research before accepting his answer. I'm guessing he thought I was asking if the sting caused the cancer. I meant to ask if the sting could possibly have created conditions favorable to the growth of the cancer cells. I'm sure the answer is out there on the web. Some news from obx:
http://www.obpa.org/default.asp has a flash intro with pictures guaranteed to trigger nostalgia.

Yes, I was able to get back on aarp as long as I don't have to use password to log in. It is cool here today in the Dallas area. I feel bad for my daughter and 2 older granddaughters who are at an all day rock concert, Edgefest. I have the other kids at home feeding them mac & cheese. It is too damp outside to play so the living room in like a tornado hit it. Oh well, it all cleans up when they are gone away again. Take care of yourself.

I had a skin graft yesterday and the hand is wrapped tightly so that I have no movement of wrist or fingers. I also have 2 1/2 inches of stitching on the inside of my upper left arm where they removed the skin for the graft. The doctor looks at it again Tuesday at which time we should know if the bacteria has been controlled. It is a little bit painful but easily manageable with the proper dosage of blackberry brandy. I had no idea that certain insect stings and spider bites carried antibiotic resistant bacteria.
