It was Carlson's Raiders. 221 of them were packed in two submarines and delivered to a couple of Pacific Islands where they carried out the first ground attacks against the Japanese. My Navy Special Operations team was only 10 men and we barely fit in a sub. They also completed a 31 day mission behind enemy lines on Guadacanal. Colonel Carlson is credited with giving the Marines their "Gung Ho' slogan which is Chinese for "working together." He was FDR's representative to China in 1937, sent there to see what the communists were up to, and obviously learned a lot about guerilla tactics. The Marines are the best fighting men in the world and the Raiders were the best of the Marines. Your brother should be proud of being a member of that group
My brother sent pictures of this place when he was in training just before he was recruited from the Marines to Charlie's Rangers. He trained with the Navy Seals. I remember him talking about this place back in 1940. He later went at night to Boganville(sp?) Island at night to see what was there before going back to his ship. He said it was the most terrifying experience of his life
This was taken the second time I used my wife's camera. It is the view from the side yard of my rented cabin at Hunting Island State Park, SC. I can feel the cool breeze on my face just looking at the scene.
