President Obama recently noted that when PAYGO was in effect and followed in the Clinton administration, the federal government actually ran a budget surplus for several years. Bush 43 turned that around and almost doubled the national debt in his 8 years in office. Thanks to the continuing wars in the Middle East and the so-called "stimulus" bill, this administration is running a current year deficit of about $1.9 trillion dollars, some 13% of Gross Domestic Product: OUTRAGEOUS.
To prevent the rapid rise in INFLATION, the federal government needs to stop the excessive spending. PAYGO is a somewhat feeble attempt to require spending cuts or tax increases to cover any new expenditures. Congress frequently finds a way to bypass this requirement, as it seems most members of Congress delight in spending our money, sometimes to their own benefit.
If President Obama - a "talented" spender in his own right - is really serious about being fiscally responsible, he needs to stop proposing new and expensive programs, like so called health care "reform". We as citizens need to exhibit more individual responsibility for our own health care. Too many of our citizens are overweight to obese, too many still smoke, too many use drugs or consume too much alcohol, and/or do not get regular exercise. Our citizens should try hard to live a healthy lifestyle and consequently to reduce the strain on the providers of health care.
The federal government needs to get its fiscal house in order!
