I've made the trip many times, and many times for nothing more than to just enjoy the scenery. Frequently, when I get to Frederick, I take Alternate U.S. 40 West, and enjoy a lazy drive along the curves and the hills, passing quaint little towns along the way. On this particular trip, we did have a destination in mind, and time was a factor; so we kept to the Interstate
We have traveled this area while traveling to Point Marion, PA after getting onto I-68 off of I-81 at Hagerstown. I was amazed at the different colors with the sun hitting it.
Unless this was a highway with another name or route # I would think this was built after the PA Turnpike and they have many tunnels. My guess is they decided this would be much cheaper to maintain.
