I LIVE N OREGON, MY HUSBAND AND I ARE BOTH ON MEDICARE,[BELOW POVERTY LEVEL] WE NAVE NO OTHER INSURANCE AND BECAUSE OF A RECENT UNEXPECTED ILLNESS, THE BILLS ARE PILEING UP. BECAUSE BOTH OF US HAVE HAD SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS, WE COULD`NT AFFORD ANY OTHER INSURANCE,
THEY MADE THE PREMIUMS SO HIGH OR REFUSED US WHICH IS THE SAME IN THE LONG RUN. [WE WOULD HAVE TO GIVE UP FOOD !]MY HUSBAND HAD 2 HEART ATTACKS,2 BY-PASSESS IN 6 MONTH IN 1996. THEN DEVELOPED HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND DIABETES. I HAD MY STOMACHE REMOVED BECAUSE OF CANCER
IN 1998. NOW MY HUSBAND HAS HAD DOZENS OF TEST AND HAD 2 ANGIOPLASTYS
AND 4 STENTS PLACED IN HIS HEART ARTERIES, NOW THEY ARE GOING TO DO THE SAME TO HIS LEGS SO HE CAN WALK WITH OUT PAIN. BECAUSE OF STRESS THE DR. THOUGHT I WAS HAVING HEART PROBLEMS. SO MORE TEST. I`M FINE.
SO, NO INSURANCE, BILLS, NO INCOME. IS THERE ANY ASSISTANCE OR ANSWER TO MY DELEMMA? THE FUNNY FARM IS NEXT !!
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME...LONNIE

well i for one will never go with an advantage plan as many Drs in my area are refusing patients on these plans .my understanding is they don't pay the Dr. as much as other medicare plans such as type"j" plans.

You are correct! The reason for this is under a Medicare Supplement plan the provider of service can receive from 100% to 119% of Medicare?s ?allowed amount" were as in a Medicare Advantage plans the provider may receive from 80% to 85% of the same allowable Medicare amount.

For this reason, some Doctors will not accept a Medicare Advantage plans. Then again, some providers choose to accept this payment and continue to see their patients. It works much like an HMO and or PPO plan. Some providers will accept both types of payments.

Based on what I've read about Advantage plans they are nothing but an HMO, and should be called what they are, i.e. HMO....However, I have never owned one, and I don't plan to.

I would tend to agree with your assessment. For some reason CMS that governs these plans does not allow us to refer to these plans in this manner, why is not clear to us. It may be they do not want any of the stereo types that HMO's plans have generated in the past.

Arguments can be made for both good and bad. It's all about personal perceptions. I guess the old adage of "don?t knock it until you have tried it" could be added as well.
Thanks for your comments!
