I'll be there in 2 weeks to have a bon ton roulet ! I was a child in the early 50's in Gretna, and we took the Algiers or Gretna ferry to Canal Street--all dressed up in our finest with those Sunday Mary Jane's that gave you blisters every step you took. No AC then and plenty of sweat to go around in those hot fancy clothes. Trolley's were still on Canal Street, and "going to town" was a special event for us. The local schools were not McDonalds; they were McDonough, named after a rich planter, John McDonough, who donated money for building schools. We had a celebration in May each year to honor him. Just sold the house in Metairie last summer. NOLA,a place like no other with people like no other--spirited and connected forever
I grew up in New Orleans (1953-1966). My Mom was born and reared in NOLA. I went to HS at Cor Jesu (now Brother Martin) and left to join the Navy. My aunt - Lulu - owned the Pirates Alley Shop at Royal & Pirates Alley. I worked for her after school when I was in HS. I have fond memories of the French Quarter. I went out with a girl who lived with her family on Charters Street. The was a place on Decatur St., near the old Jackson Brewry, where you could smell the brewry, a sugar refinery, and coffe being roasted. What a place togrow up in!!!
When worked and lived there it was a fun city I use to get in morning walk from St Claude to Royal St.to Canal St and back on Decurte or Cartautes ,to get my excise .

Gosh! Nostalgia - and I remember walking those streets in my dreams, and closing my eyes driving down streets with cars parked on both sides. My brother and I were teenagers, no less! Worked on Canal St. at Rampart Ave not long after graduating H.S. Remember the old Rubenstein's? Kindergarten was McDonald 16 and H.S. was at Francis T. Nicholls... ah well~
