The Hydrangea (A Southern Online Novel)

Chapter 1  The Quickie Courtship

Momma was a city girl, who lived in Jersey and worked in NYC for Procter & Gamble.  Daddy was a  country boy,  from the deep South.  It was wartime and Daddy was temporarily stationed up North, until he shipped out overseas to the War.

He met Momma on a sunny day at the Atlantic City Beach.  Momma must have been charmed by my Daddy in his uniform, tall, dark and handsome.    They met, and in a little over a month they got married, right before Daddy was leaving for the War.  It would be two years, before they laid eyes on each other again.  He sure did sweep my Momma off her feet.

Daddy’s return must have been exciting for Momma. Though I can not imagine, what the reality of not really knowing my Daddy, her husband, must have been like for her.  This must have been hard for Momma.  Afterall, Daddy was really a stranger, but Momma never shared her thoughts with me of that time. I can only put myself in her place and think, " Momma, you were an amazing lady."

Momma and Daddy settled in Jersey, built a home with the GI Bill, had my two Sisters, but something was missing for Daddy.  He yearned to go back to his good ole life in the South.  After a couple of years of my Daddy asking, Mom loved him so much, that she agreed to move South.. sight unseen.   Daddy must have painted Momma a pretty picture of his South.  " It has a huge lake, with a sandy beach only four blocks from where we will live."  Dad will give us five acres to build a house on, and he lives next door and my brother next to him."  " "Life will be good."  "The trees are so green and so huge in the South."  We will plant a garden, raise animals, and the kids will be safe to roam and play outside."

My Daddy was a charmer.
