Merry Christmas Everyone!

I've recently accepted a 4 month assignment at the University of San Diego (UCSD) in the School of Medicine in La Jolla, CA. It's a commute, but everything else is right on ! I will be supporting the Director of Graduate Affairs in the Biomedical Science Department.

They are in their "recruiting season" and will accept 75 (MD and PhD)candidates out of 300 plus applications. These people have already gone to school for 4 - 6 years and are preparing for 5-7 more years to begin in the Fall of 09.

It's fascinating to see the current class in their white coats and to meet some of the best brains in the country!

I will be closer to my dream job than ever before and each person I come in contact with may be able to help me. They've already said after they've seen what I can do in two days...they'd like to keep me, but the budgets will tell the story in March when we are finished choosing our candidates. The mountains of paperwork that goes into each person's file is incredible. I'm also getting to use my Medical Terminology and possibly my transcription skills too.

Wanted to thank all of you for your prayers, love and support. It really feels great to have so many incredible people in my life. I am truly Blessed!

Love to all,

Kat/Kathryn

Basking in the Afterglow
Highlights of my trip to Washington, DC as Contest Winner of “My Dream Job” September 08

To all my family and friends who have been asking me to describe my experience of the trip to Washington, DC last week. I started off this contest by writing, so it seems I’m to continue.
Wednesday: The travel arrangements were impeccable and there were no delays or problems. San Diego Airport and had a direct flight from San Diego to Washington/Dulles airport via United Airlines (~10 hours travel time).
The hotel was the Renaissance Mayflower and it was located only a few miles from the White House and the Washington Convention Center where we were to spend most of our time. This is an exquisitely kept hotel built in 1925 with 650 rooms. We had above-average hotel service. Everything from great linens and beds to maid service twice daily and exceptional food. It felt like celebrity treatment.
Thursday: The first night of the convention, there was a dinner in our honor at a lovely restaurant with Louisiana flare called, Acadiana. The AARP staff who had worked with us for 9 months planned and attended this dinner with us. We were introduced to local TV News Anchor, JC Hayward. She is DC’s answer to Oprah and highly respected. She was there to meet us as we were to be interviewed by her the next day.
Friday: This was our day of being in the spotlight! We were on stage at 11:00 in a room that seated about two to three hundred. I couldn’t see how many people were there due to the bright lights of the cameras.
JC Hayward asked questions of the six winners and each of us had about 3 questions to answer. I was very nervous as we had prepared our answers ahead of time, but she decided to change it up and ask us what she wanted to ask.
The one question that stands out that she asked me was to describe my emotions about being downsized, as that was the category in which I won the contest. I basically said that I was devastated at first since I thought that I loved my job, but I found out that you should never love your job because you are only a number on a budget spreadsheet and it’s not personal. I also added that it was a bittersweet result because my boss gave me a large severance package that enabled me to relocate to be with my mother in the last months of her life.
Truthfully, I can’t remember the rest of the questions for that session.
We were again on stage at 2:00 that same day, but this time we were individually responsible for speaking with the microphone before a small audience in the convention center about “Networking”.
I described an actual experience I had this summer when someone from AARP in Washington talked to AARP in Sacramento, who talked to someone in San Diego about me and they guided me to the County of San Diego. I was then hired on a 3 month assignment at the San Diego Public Defenders office within 3 days!
Both “talks” were very well received and people came up to us and shook our hands and wished us well after each session. Some even asked for an autograph and a business card (which AARP had furnished for us). One man came up to me who said he was a retired doctor and said that I was “on the right track with my dream job because the right person in the medical office is sadly missing” and he also said that I should work for a doctor who accepts Medicare patients as that’s going away as well. This was news to me as I haven’t started researching Medicare yet( I think I’m in denial that I’ll be 65 in~15 months)! Very unique and interesting experience to say the least, but I was exhausted afterwards.
Saturday: This was to be our tour day to see the Washington monuments and Arlington Cemetery, but Hurricane Hanna had her way and brought a big storm to DC and there was flash flooding and high winds to the point of all tours being cancelled. We were disappointed, but found a great discount store across the street from our hotel and went shopping, got soaked and then went back to the convention center and visited some more exhibits.
Sunday: Clear and sunny. This was our travel home day and we had to be up and ready very early for the shuttle to pick us up to ride the 30 miles back to the airport.

Provided by AARP:  Three concerts – Natalie Cole/Chaka Khan; Chicago and Paul Simon. Also all travel – even shuttles and baggage fees, along with the air fare and 5 star hotel for 4 nights.
It’s not over yet….we are still receiving our career coaching until the end of the year from Retirement Jobs.com in Boston.
Next year, the 6 winners hope to be able to have a reunion at the 2009 AARP Convention in Las Vegas – WITH our dream jobs achieved!

While waiting for my DREAM JOB to happen.......actual living takes money!

When I get to Washington in September, I will use the connections in this story as a good example of networking, but for time sake now, I'll skip that part.

Fast forward - going to work after 14 months.

Items needed:

Strength (40 hour weeks are not easy when you've been out of the groove).

Cultural saavy (totally different geographical region and a totally different industry).

Patience (working a 3 month temp assignment - in an entry level position)

Pride ( having to swallow much less per hour than in the last 20 years)

Restraint (family and friends have suggested that "perhaps my dream is too big and I should just be happy to survive")well-meaning, I'm sure.

Time for a little bragging here, OK?

Sometimes life experiences happen and we don’t get to publicize them, but this forum allows me to....so here’s a story to be read with tissues!

My beautiful 22-year-old FirstBorn Granddaughter wanted to do something for her mother this year that included a surprize, a gift for Mom, a gift for Nana and something for the whole family to enjoy! This took quite a bit of thought and planning as it’s pretty hard to surprize my daughter.

So, she called me and asked me to clear my calendar for a long weekend over Mother’s Day(which I did immediately), then she got online and purchased an airline ticket for me(with her own hard-earned money, mind you) and sent the itinerary to me on email.

Then she enlisted her StepDad to clear her Mom’s schedule and commitments(hard to do for an over-achiever)cleaned the entire house and prepared the guest room.

Needless to say that when I appeared in my daughter’s living room a few nights later - she screamed and we all cried a few tears!

As if this were not enough........she researched recipes, planned a brunch for "Our Day" and shopped for, cooked and served the food to her mom and me as well as several guests.

We had an amazing weekend doing things together and the gift of sharing time was the best of all!

It was the Second Best Mother’s Day of my life so far!  Thanks to God for the amazing reward HE gives us of our grandchildren....our heritage and our future!

p.s. The First Best was when my daughter surprized me with a Mother of the Year honor in 1999, but that’s another story.

Hello Everyone! I’m Baaaaack!! I was in Cyber Jail for over 6 weeks and it is great to be back!

It would be impossible to write about everything that has happened in 6 weeks, so I’ll try to summarize by month..

More later.....

This is my first week out of school and it's busy with personal interviews about my journey. One from an author in Oregon who's book is coming out in November and another from the local paper here where I live. It will be out next week. Both interviewers asked me to go back to my first job! Well, it takes about an hour to cover 40+ years!

Thank God for good memory, as I recall my career history starting in my early 20's.  These people are very kind as they listen to me speak about the mountaintops and valleys of my career and life. It feels a little strange to talk so much about oneself, but then that's what winning this contest is all about! Hope it touches someone!

I will keep everyone posted about my job search as there's activity in that arena too. Signing off from Sunny San Diego and I welcome  your comments!

Today marked the end of 8 months of studies in the Medical Assistant Course. I now need to move from Student Mode to Job Seeker Mode once again. I have mixed feelings about my "graduation". I really loved the teachers and fellow students as well as what I was learning. Working in the Medical Profession will give me a chance to pay back for what they do for millions of us!

If I didn't have to augment my income, I would have gone for a whole degree program. However, survival calls, so I'm planning my next steps. I'm very thankful for the amenities that this contest has given me, as it reminds one that we are on the right track.

I'm working on my strategy for the coming weeks/days and from the 2 interviews so far, I'm feeling excited and hopeful.

More later......

When we are looking for our Dream Job, especially entering a new career field, it is imperative to establish and utilize our network. This can be family, friends, people at church, women in your club. Everyone knows someone that is in the Medical Profession and I’m thankful that my SoCal family is involved in one of my top choice Employers...Scripps Health.

Also, while interviewing, I’ve been asking for advice of next steps and asking total strangers to pass on my resume. I’m thinking if they are interested enough to contact me for an interview, then they may be interested in referring me, if that particular situation isn’t a fit.

I would like to hear from those that are trying this or who are attempting to break into a new career or industry.

Until nextime and enjoy your Springtime!

 Hello Everyone!

I wanted to share with you that I’ll be completing my training at the end of April and have started the interview process.

The feedback I’m getting is very positive. The Medical profession is looking for people who have had a well-rounded career and are enthusiastic about helping others as well as keeping themselves and others healthy. It also helps to have a winning smile and sincere desire. It’s very encouraging to know that I’m on the right track.

It’s never too late!

Winning the AARP “My Dream Job” Contest
Upon reading about the nationwide contest in the October 2007 edition of the AARP Bulletin, I decided to write an essay to see if there was a chance that it would get noticed.
The essay was about my recent experience being downsized in Silicon Valley, losing both my parents and how I was lead to pursue a new direction in life. I shared my new venture as a student at the Medical Academy of Vista Adult School, Regional Occupational Program and how it was going to lead me to my new dream job as a Medical Assistant.
Late in December, I received an email that I was a finalist in this contest, but still didn’t think that I would actually win. I was asked by the national headquarters of the AARP to sign many release documents to use my essay and my personal information, and I cooperated.
Then, early in January, I was notified that I was, in fact, one of 6 winners nationwide and that I would soon be receiving further instructions.
This was indeed, great news! One of the best prizes is professional career coaching to help me obtain this dream job, among other prizes.
The next step was to meet the other 5 winners and the AARP staff via teleconference.
We were each chosen in one of 6 categories. I was chosen in the “Downsized” category.   We were told that we were selected out of ~7200 entries.
In February, we will be contacted by the representatives of the AARP in each of our respective states. We will also be shipped our new Laptops and our prize money.
In March, we will be journaling our experience on the AARP website, so that others in our situation may be encouraged by our journey.
In September, we will be given our travel accommodations to the Annual AARP Convention in Washington, D. C. There, we will be honored at a dinner and reception as well as be featured on a discussion panel.
I’d like to give most of the credit of this essay to my wonderful experience at school. There are always the usual myths in our later years about being “too old to learn” “not fitting in with the younger students”, “not being able to focus and retain”; all of which, I’ve proven to myself are false!
Being involved in a career that will be paying back to the community is indeed, exciting and I’m thankful that my training program and now winning this contest, will make my dream a success. THANK YOU TO AARP!
