I should add a comment about the smoke and steam. The Engine is Coal fired. At full power, heavy black smoke is shown, and excess steam is vented skyward. A Oil fired engine is in use now. If all goes well, all coal fired units will be replaced. They may make it out for Photo Days only. For now, being on the Register of National Treasures allows it to throw fly ash all over the terrain and the passengers. Time for change! Art
Being a New Englander, I reCOGnized this photo right away! LOL I have been there many times but alas, only in an auto.... it was a beautiful view from the top until about 20 years ago when I began noticing the purple-ish sky in the distance. A kindly Park Ranger informed me it was SMOG!!! Alas, the bloom was off the rose. (geeze - this is turning into a story......)
