Do you remember when you were younger, I mean really
younger? How exciting birthdays were? I rembember
when....... yeah, I can still remember... I have
always been petite. So, I suppose that is why I
would let people know well in advance how old
I was going to be. For instance, when I was 11,
about 2 months before Aug. 8th, I would say I
am going to be 12. Then when I was 12, I would
be asked how old are you? I would proudly say,
I am going to be 13 in 2 mos.
Well, the age 15, turns to 16. 17 to 18... You get
the picture. I proudly let people know 2 mos. in
advance. Then comes the 30's... people would say
gee, you don't look that old. Always was blessed
to be told I looked at least 10 years younger.
Or, how about the, "Gee, you don't look old enough
to be a grandmother."
Time passes, and that number 50 comes, and AARP
sends out the invitation to join. Feeling somewhat
irate, the invitation gets thrown in the trash. What,
did they do the next year? Well, they didn't say "you
don't look old enough to be 51." LOL...
Okay, finally the day of acceptance set in.. I am
officially AARP's newest Senior Citizen member.
Hey, I accepted for the discounts, okay? Okay !!!
Wednesday, I visited my elderly neighbor, and
we have discussed birthdays before. He usually
knows I am near his sons age. We were sitting
at the table having a conversation, and I mentioned
my upcoming birthday. He asked how old would i
be? I said, you tell me... gee, he always did know.
With sincerity he said, 76? I nearly fell off my chair.
::::sputter::::: sputter::::, Bud, how could you say
that, you are kidding right? Soberly, he looked at
me confused. God bless his heart, he was having
a Senior moment, ( I hope)... He guessed again,
74? I said, no... 66? I said, no... Now, talk about
swallowing any pride, I think it came out my toes.
God bless him, I know he was confused.. Finally I
told him I would be 64. I felt badly for him, because
he is such a joker. He reminds me of Tim Conway in
looks and actions. Not to speak of the comedian
he could be.
Well, it is official... God has finally let me know I am
a Senior Citizen, like it or not... But, you know I am
okay with it. I consider the alternative. I mean they
could be putting flowers on my grave, instead of
delivering them to me at my door. (Which by the way
they are delivering them in a little while, they called
for directions.)
Maybe not everyone has struggled with aging. But,
I did, because I am just young at heart, I don't dress
like a teeny bopper, but I don't dress old. I am blessed
with good skin. Most of all I am blessed I can still
get up and go.... I am 64 today. Next August 8th,
I will be 65.
