A fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist
directs you where to go
So make the best of this test
and don't ask why
It's not a question
But a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable
But in the end is right
I hope you had the time
of your life

Early yesterday morning my roomate noticed a very beautiful, but confused black Lab running up and down the street. I hate seeing a lost and confused pet who was obviously looking for his home. After my roomate called the matter to my attention I knew I had to help! Closing the bedroom door to keep my two cats out of the way I brought the dog inside who promptly ate the cat's food and drank some water. Fortunately the owner of the dog had the foresight to attach an ID tag to the dog's collar. The tag had the dog's name, "JAKE" along with the his owners phone number and address. I was relieved to be able to call the owner directly. The owner and family were soon reunited with Jake.
This is a great example of how important having ID tags on your pets can be!
I had much the same experience a couple of months back. We were out shoveling snow and these 2 black labs, big but still puppies, came galloping through the snow. They were extremely friendly, but obviously tired from making their way through 3-5 feet of sno in spots. They both wore collars with names and numbers, and since we didn't recognize them as living in our area, we brought them into the garage, fed and watered them and put some blankets down for them to lie on. They both flopped down and immediately went to sleep. We left a message at the number provided, and later that evening received a call from the owner, who lived several miles away. Apparently, the owner felt she hadn't needed to shovel out their pen, and they basically just walked out over the top of the fence when the snow got deep enough! That kind of negligence didn't sit well with me, but the dogs were obviously loved and wanted, so I was just glad we got them back home.... and maybe next winter, they'll do a little better snow maintenance in the pen!
I'm sure you will make sure the collars are on all of your dogs in the future. I have two indoor cats so I don't have to deal with collars. ID implants are a good idea as well, but the tags are the first line of protection
A happy ending indeed, due to your kindness and the owners foresight to have the tags on. I plan to make sure my dogs are wearing their tags always (my husband takes their collars off at times) as we live in the country and lost dogs are a dime a dozen out here
