Born in Philly, I was raised in Yeadon, Southwest Suburb. College at Lebanon Valley near Hershey, then Ohio and Minnesota. Back to Lehigh in Bethlehem for my PhD, then Illinos and Indiana, PA. Sons are in State College, Harrisburg, and Murrsville east of Pittsburgh. I've had reason to be in most of the towns housing colleges and uniiversities, mainly though the 14 State Owned Universities, e.g., West Chester, Millersville, Shippensburg, Clarion, Slippery Rock, Edinboro, Mansfield, East Stroudsberg, Kutztown, Lock Haven, California.

Towns dominated by colleges are still great places to live and these colleges generate work possibilities. Sarasota's colleges are around the periphery of the city for the most part, so while there is a strong arts culture here, the colleges aren't a centerpiece.

Hi Doug,

I agree with you. I left a job as an auditor at an upscale retail store for a receptionist position at our local hospital. I needed to return to work for medical benefits, but I also wanted to work in an environment where I felt my skills were valued more . . . not monetarily, but by people in need.

When I finally reach Medicare age (I'm 62), I will return to volunteer work that I love. I am a certified Hospice Volunteer for 3 1/2 years and also started a Women's Resource Center for abused women and children, when I lived in PA.

Where I live in Casa Grande, AZ, there is a child advocacy program called CASA. I would love to be the voice for children that can't speak for themselves.
