About Me

I'm an Independent Small Business Consultant and Educator. My purpose here is to find and encourage Encore Workers to bring their skills and talents to the Sarasota Workforce. SCOPE will bring Ecore author, Marc Freedman to the Winter Forum.

Interests:
I enjoy tennis and golf, but my best sport is Beach Bocce! I am a writer, too.

The baby-boomers are reaching "retirement" age, but can they, will they really retire?  The July/August AARP Bulletin has some things to think about under the articloe titled, "Oops! I retired too soon".  Even if there are finaancial pressures on many, others won't have that problem because if smart investing, and will still want to come to Sunny Florida, get out of the Upper Midwest andf Northeast ALL year, and play some golf.  The thing iss that Boomers have been very active and are likely to live well into their 80's or longer, and they will be tired of golf in less that a year!

I think they will look for work, and not just any work, but work that matters, that can make a difference, and that takes advantage of their knowledge and experience.  They should be attractive to employers because that tend to be loyal, smart, have a great work ethic, and know the value of productivity.

If you are an employer or now think you might be an "Encore Worker", I recommend two great books.  The first is Marc Freedman's Encore: Finding Work that Matters for the Second Half of Life, and Mary Furlong's Turning Silver into Gold.  These are must reads!

Born in Philly, I was raised in Yeadon, Southwest Suburb. College at Lebanon Valley near Hershey, then Ohio and Minnesota. Back to Lehigh in Bethlehem for my PhD, then Illinos and Indiana, PA. Sons are in State College, Harrisburg, and Murrsville east of Pittsburgh. I've had reason to be in most of the towns housing colleges and uniiversities, mainly though the 14 State Owned Universities, e.g., West Chester, Millersville, Shippensburg, Clarion, Slippery Rock, Edinboro, Mansfield, East Stroudsberg, Kutztown, Lock Haven, California.

Towns dominated by colleges are still great places to live and these colleges generate work possibilities. Sarasota's colleges are around the periphery of the city for the most part, so while there is a strong arts culture here, the colleges aren't a centerpiece.

Hi Doug,

I agree with you. I left a job as an auditor at an upscale retail store for a receptionist position at our local hospital. I needed to return to work for medical benefits, but I also wanted to work in an environment where I felt my skills were valued more . . . not monetarily, but by people in need.

When I finally reach Medicare age (I'm 62), I will return to volunteer work that I love. I am a certified Hospice Volunteer for 3 1/2 years and also started a Women's Resource Center for abused women and children, when I lived in PA.

Where I live in Casa Grande, AZ, there is a child advocacy program called CASA. I would love to be the voice for children that can't speak for themselves.
