Washington D.C. - In spite of major traffic issues and the rainy, overcast weather, the 2008 Day of Service prevailed. On May 8th, volunteers, members and employees of AARP blanketed their communities across the U.S., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia. We accomplished a variety of hands-on educational and direct-service projects that benefited the elderly, the disabled, and other vulnerable populations.
The state offices participated in a variety of projects including cleaning up of local parks and trails; hosting shredding events, and conducting pedestrian safety surveys. North Carolina installed 40 smoke alarms in the homes and apartments of low-income individuals and families without working smoke alarms. Maryland partnered with a local outreach center and served a hot meal to 105 homeless and needy men, women and children while staff and chapter members in South Carolina collected several thousand pounds of food to help feed low-income residents. Similarly, staff in the National Office devoted the day to supporting 30+ service projects in the Washington metropolitan area.
