In my next life, I want to come back as a Teddy Bear. Everybody loves them, nobody cares if they're fat, and the older they get, the more they're worth!

About Me

I'm 59 years young, and currently single. I'm active, happy, and try to stay positive most of the time. I lived most of my life in Southern Illinois, but my job brought me to Michigan in 1991. I have made some wonderful friends in Michigan, so this is my home now. After 36 years working, I was offered early retirement, and took it. I have been retired for 5 years now. I have a little work that I do from my home computer, which gives me a little extra "mad" money, but since it is connected with advertising and the auto industry, business is not that good right now. Politically, I'm a moderate and vote for a candidate, not a party. I try to pick the candidate that I believe has the best solutions to the problems we face. I'm very concerned issues that effect those of us over 50, like healthcare, Social Security, and the housing market problem.

Interests:
I'm "mom" to 2 "kids", Fred and Wilma, who are furry and walk on 4 legs. I adopted them from a rescue group, and wouldn't trade them for the world. I bowl on a league during the fall and winter, and I recently purchased a Wii, which I'm really having fun with. I play on it almost daily.

After listening to the Presidential candidates’ speeches to the AARP convention, it is clear to me that John McCain is out of touch on the issues raised by AARP members. He is still talking about allowing contributors to invest their SS contributions in the stock market!

I will start drawing SS in a couple of years, and will depend on it as part of my retirement income, and I know many seniors who depend on it for their only income.   I certainly don’t want any part of SS invested in the stock market. Despite the fact most of my 401k was in low risk investments, it has tanked thanks to the falling stock market, and bad economy over the past few years. SS is in bad enough shape, so I hate to think what would could happened if even part of the Social Security funds are allowed to be invested. I guess when you are wealthy enough that you don’t have to depend on that money as part of your retirement, you could afford to gamble with it.

It appears that Obama is a lot more in touch with those issues that affect the AARP crowd. I was surprised that McCain was not more in touch with these issues. I thought Obama had very good ideas on how to go about fixing SS, and laid out good ideas on healthcare. He answered the questions that asked to him during the live session in detail and laid out plans. John McCain, on the other hand, didn’t really answer the questions that were asked of him. He just kept talking about how he is a maverick and can reach across party lines. He even managed to get a plug in for his new VP nominee.

I hope that every AARP member will watch the videos of both Obama and McCain, and pass the link to the site on to friends, so they can see who is really in touch with the issues that effect us.
