After listening to the
Presidential candidates’ speeches to the AARP convention, it
is clear to me that John McCain is out of touch on the issues raised
by AARP members. He is still talking about allowing
contributors to invest their SS contributions in the stock market!
I will start drawing SS in a
couple of years, and will depend on it as part of my retirement
income, and I know many seniors who depend on it for their only
income. I certainly don’t want any part of SS
invested in the stock market. Despite the fact most of my 401k
was in low risk investments, it has tanked thanks to the falling
stock market, and bad economy over the past few years. SS is in
bad enough shape, so I hate to think what would could happened if
even part of the Social Security funds are allowed to be
invested. I guess when you are wealthy enough that you
don’t have to depend on that money as part of your retirement,
you could afford to gamble with it.
It appears that Obama is a lot
more in touch with those issues that affect the AARP crowd. I
was surprised that McCain was not more in touch with these
issues. I thought Obama had very good ideas on how to go about
fixing SS, and laid out good ideas on healthcare. He answered
the questions that asked to him during the live session in detail
and laid out plans. John McCain, on the other hand,
didn’t really answer the questions that were asked of
him. He just kept talking about how he is a maverick and can
reach across party lines. He even managed to get a plug in for
his new VP nominee.
I hope that
every AARP member will watch the videos of both Obama and McCain,
and pass the link to the site on to friends, so they can see who is
really in touch with the issues that effect us.
