(I used to tell my students that the difference between Southern and Northern speech was that, in the south, you take a monosolyllable--here--and draaaggggg it out jes' as fur as it'll go: heaaaaaaah, theyaaaaah, an' eveuhwayuhhhhh--whereas in the North, we take polysyllables, and make them monosyllables: "Djeetyet?" "Kwitchabelliaken!"
But no one never made me no fried chicken and cold tater salad in all the time I was there. (Does the practice exclude Yankees?)
