Me too Andy. I lived near Austin Texas for awhile, and some of the "old timers" I hung out with used to tell story after story about her. My FAVORITE (and I know you don't drink alcohol, so you won't be offended!) story was the night she did a "gig" in an Austin bar (I forget which one) and she did a patriotic song, but FIRST asked any current or former Military members to stand, State their first name and branch of service. (I'm almost positive(?) this was during "nam). So several stood. Guess what. EVERY BRANCH including Coast Guard was present and accounted for!! What they DIDN'T know, was Janis ALWAYS "suckered" the "new guys". So, after singing "God Bless America" (I've only heard a cassette tape recorded by a drunken patron of the tavern she was at that night of her "God Bless America" version, but I'm sure you know she was no threat to Kate Smith!!!) she 'rounds up the AD/Vets & heads for the bar. OK GUY's, last one standing gets their tab paid by the rest. Fair 'nuff?" OF COURSE. THESE ARE NAVY, ARMY, AIR FORCE, COAST GUARD & MARINES. What was Janis THINKING? Well, it took a bit longer than USUAL, but of course she had ONE MORE THAN ANY OTHER 'SERVICE MEMBER', and walked away to the loud roars and cheers of her "fans". HER tab that night (according to the guy that told me this story) was over $100 as she had eaten dinner there BEFORE performing, and had put it........................... of course, ON HER TAB!!!!!! I miss her too. Can you imagine "The Band"? "Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Skynyrd, Scott, Asheton, Wright, Gee, Diddley and bringing up the rear after all of the OTHER greats have warmed up will be Jerry Reed!!" No WONDER they call it ETERNITY!!
